English Premier League: Gary Neville is a red...is a red...
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 and Fernando Torres’s 50
million pound sale to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786, Gary Neville was going through his career’s last stages as a Manchester United player.
Neville has been with the Red Devils since 1992. He was a part of the 1992 class of United’s youth academy team. A team which won the F.A Youth Cup and included the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-Beckham-c10432, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt,
Phillip Neville and Robbie Savage.
The man himself has admitted plenty of times that he had neither the pace of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Paul-Scholes-c29394, so it is a mystery as to how he made himself into one of the best right backs of his generation.
Some journalists have called Neville a massively overachieving player, a player who benefitted from the presence of hugely talented footballers around him. However, a lot of those players lacked traits which Neville had in abundance.
Therefore it isn’t a surprise that Neville received admiration and praise along with respect from his peers as well as the club’s faithful supporters.
In reality, Neville has been a despised figure in the English Premier League. The amount of times his moustache has been a subject of ridicule is best when left untouched. Neville was the best at bringing out the worst in rival
supporters but in doing so he became a favourite of United’s faithful following.
Not only that, he had the character and the confidence to make his thoughts public rather than follow a policy of deliberate appeasement.
In 2006 when Manchester United scored a memorable late winner against Liverpool at Old Trafford through Rio Ferdinand’s last minute header, it was Neville who raced towards the Liverpool fans seating area in the stadium and kissed
the Manchester United badge on his chest.
Quite predictably, F.A didn’t take a favourable view of this and imposed a fine on Gary Neville as his conduct was not seen as sportsman like. Upon learning of the 5000 pound fine that has been imposed on him, Neville questioned
the wisdom behind F.A’s decision, asking English football’s governing body about whether they wanted the players to act as robots by taking out all of the emotion in their game.
The ex-Manchester United right back was involved in another controversial incident last season when according to television replays he responded to Carlos Tevez’s goal celebration against Manchester United by flipping the finger.
While football’s administrating organizations do not see eye to eye with people like Gary Neville, the fans look up to such players as their true representatives on the field.
His unwavering loyalty and passion for Manchester United has been his standout trait as a footballer. On various occasions, the man himself has admitted that he has not been blessed with talent which can be compared to his other
teammates therefore he has made up for it with passion, determination and hard work.
When history is written about Neville’s time with the English national team and Manchester United, his name will be written in golden words.
Accomplished professionals such as http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rio-Ferdinand-c31173 have already stated that Neville has been England’s best right back ever. This compliment does total justice to the kind of attitude and approach that the defender exhibited during
the whole of his career.
Neville’s fans on the terraces of Old Trafford used to pay tribute to the right back by singing “Gary Neville is a red...is a red...is a red...Gary Neville is a red and he hates scousers”.
The chant in itself embodies all Neville stood for, after all hating Liverpool is a pre-requisite for a Manchester United legend.
