English Premier League: Giggs says No to MLS
Ryan Giggs who is a legend for Manchester United fans around the world has stated that after the coming football season, he will not be transferring to Major League Soccer in the U.S.A.
Giggs has won 11 premier league titles and 2 UEFA Champions League’s with Manchester United ever since he started playing for them in 1991. He is one of the few footballers today, who have spent their entire careers at one football club. He currently holds the record for making the highest number of first team appearances for Manchester United. Ryan Giggs has been unfortunate enough to not play in even a single World Cup tournament though.
He is currently the most decorated player in English football history because of his immense success with Manchester United. Currently aged 36, there is a real possibility that Giggs might retire after the coming season and take up a coaching job at Manchester United.
Ryan Giggs told the media during Manchester United’s pre season tour of U.S.A that he thinks U.S.A is a country with a terrific lifestyle, something that would be ideal for raising a family. The Welsh wizard added that he still has a year left in his contract at Manchester United. He also stated that after that year runs out, he might be too old to play football anymore.
Giggs, who was born in 1973, also said that MLS had grown as a league and that the quality of football has increased over the years. He also remarked that U.S.A’s performance at the World Cup recently, helped bring fans towards the Soccer as a sport inside America.
Commenting on how the pre-season training was coming along for Manchester United, he stated that everyone in the team wants to work on their fitness and the pre-season matches will provide a good opportunity for the players to regain some of their rhythm before the full season commences in August.
Manchester United are unlikely field their World Cup stars in their opening premier league match against Newcastle on 14th of August. England’s Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick, Mexico’s Javier Hernandez, France’s Patrice Evra, Serbia’s Nemenja Vidic and South Korea’s Park Ji Sung were Manchester United’s representatives in the FIFA World Cup which was held in South Africa.
Rio Ferdinand, United’s star central defender is already injured and is likely to miss the start of the season. Same goes for their Canadian born-English midfielder, Owen Hargreaves who still battling against an extended knee injury recovery process.
Javier Hernandez will join up with the Manchester United squad on 27th of July while other stars who were on World Cup duty are due to report back to the club on 28th of July 2010. Sir Alex Ferguson spoke about the need to regain full squad fitness before the start of the new season, he was speaking to Sky Sports when he said that United are not looking at the ceremonial community shield match against Chelsea as a must win match. He added that he is himself looking at the match in terms of preparing for the new season.
He also signaled that United might give an extended rest to their the players who were participating from the club in their respective national team squads in the World Cup, saying that he will not play all of them in the first match of the season. He explained that maybe one or two of the above mentioned players might play.
