English Premier League: Hernandez to be Manchester United’s Wild Card
In the summer of 2009, Manchester United parted ways with their star winger Cristiano Ronaldo who was sold by United to Real Madrid for a transfer fee of 80 million pounds. Another United player, Carlos Tevez failed to agree on contractual terms with the club and as a result was signed up by Manchester United’s local rivals Manchester City.
United failed to win the premier league in the 2009-2010 season and according to some pundits, the reason why they were unsuccessful was their over dependence on Wayne Rooney. Sir Alex Ferguson has worked in the close season to address that problem and to take some of the goal burden on Rooney, Fergie has signed up Mexico’s young striker Javier Hernandez.
Hernandez completed his move to Manchester United on 8th April, 2010 but it was subject to a work permit grant. On the 27th of May, Hernandez was granted a work permit by the English government and thus the transfer itself was made official on the 1st of July, 2010. Guadalajara, Hernandez’s previous employers signed up Hernandez when he was just fifteen year old. The footballer’s father never actually thought his son would make it as a proper professional footballer.
In his first season at Guadalajara, Hernandez who is known as Chicharito only scored a single goal in eight appearances for the Mexican club. In his second season in Mexico, Chicharito made a total of eleven appearances for Guadalajara. However, Hernandez’s best two seasons in Mexico were his last two at his ex-club. He scored a total of 27 goals in his last two seasons and caught the attention of Manchester United scouts who were monitoring his performances.
Hernandez also impressed in the 2010 FIFA World Cup as he scored two goals for his national team Mexico. His first goal for Mexico in the World Cup came against ex-finalists France, while his other goal came in Mexico’s 3-1 defeat in the round of sixteen against Argentina.
Hernandez is scheduled to join Manchester United in U.S.A on the 27th of July for their pre-season tour of North America and Mexico. One of his team mates at United, John O’Shea has come out and said that, Hernandez is going to be a wild card for Manchester United during their 2010-2011 season. He added that the Mexican striker has looked sharp for his country so far and will definitely cause problems for defenders and score goals for United.
O’Shea further said that the red devils are waiting desperately for Wayne Rooney to return from his holidays and join them in pre-season training. He also said that, it is a thrill to see Rooney perform as he is one of the best players in the World today.
