English Premier League – Match Preview: Everton versus Newcastle United
Everton take on Newcastle United, in what will be the fifth match of the season for both English club sides. Everton, who hail from the famous Merseyside area in England, will be buoyant going into this match as they almost pulled
off a surprise win over the former English league champions, Manchester United in their last match. It was not a pretty start for Everton as all has not been well in the blue half of the Merseyside.
Everton, who are currently managed by David Moyes are thought of as a side whose team spirit is built around the values of stability, strength and organization. They often appear to be one of those teams which are difficult to
break down because of their defensive discipline but Everton are much more than that. They are a side which has good attacking players as well. Their standout player this season has been Tim Cahill, after impressing for Australia in the summer at the 2010
FIFA World Cup in South Africa, Cahill has resumed his fantastic form for his club side as well.
Despite the fact that his national team failed to progress past the group stages, Cahill was seen as a bright spot for Australian football in South Africa, something that has spurred the offensive midfielder onto greater levels
of confidence. In the 2010-2011 English Premier League season, Cahill has been acting as Everton’s makeshift striker but his performances have presented David Moyes with the dilemma which begs the question of whether Cahill’s best positions is actually as
a striker rather than a midfielder.
Tim has been hailed by various football pundits for his impressive aerial strength and his capability to time his jumps to perfection which is a critical component of connecting with the ball in mid air with a header. So far this
season, Cahill’s club side, Everton have been very average and by their own standards, they have been very slow in their opening few matches of the season.
In their first match against Blackburn, Everton suffered an embarrassing defeat and against Wolves, despite managing to control more possession than their opponents, Everton failed to break Mick McCarthy’s side on a regular basis
in the game. Against Aston Villa in their third match of the season, Everton suffered an discomforting defeat as once again after maintain more control of the ball in the final twenty minutes of the match, the Merseysiders were not able to get an elusive equalizer
as the match ended in a one goal to nil defeat for them.
However, a draw against Manchester United in their last where they fought back from three goals to one down to claim a three all win has done Everton a world of good and one can expect them to be on the front foot against Newcastle
United.
Newcastle United on the other hand lost their last match against Blackpool; the Tyneside giants earned their promotion to the English Premier League after winning the Championship in the 2009-2010. So far their season has included
defeats such as the one they suffered at Old Trafford and victories like the win they achieved against Aston Villa in the Saint James’s Park.
Andy Carroll will be Newcastle’s main man in their match against Everton; he will be looking to exploit the lack of height in Everton’s defence to his advantage. Wearing the number 9 jersey, which Alan Shearer used to wear for
Newcastle United, has been easy for the tall and powerful striker.
A lot of expectations have been associated with the target man’s performances so far and he is doing his best to live up to them. The match is at Everton’s home ground which is known as the Goodison Park, therefore they will be
the favourites to get their first win of the season but only if they lose their tendency to give up cheap goals during the match.
