English Premier League – Match Preview: Wolverhampton Wanderers versus Aston Villa
Wolverhampton take on Aston Villa in their sixth league match of the season as both teams look to get used to the rough and tough progress of the English Premier League season. Wolves have started off in an average way, something
that was expected of them after giving a respectable performance in last season’s English Premier League. Wolves have been traditionally known as a club which are too good for the Championship but just not good enough for the English Premier League. Their
previous visits to English football first division have resulted in disappointments for their fans.
But under their current manager, Mick McCarthy, the Wolves have transformed themselves into a disciplined outfit, despite being favourites for relegation in the 2009-2010 season; Wanderers successfully maintained their place in the
2010-2011 Premier League season by finishing 15th in the 2009-2010 season. It was indeed a remarkable achievement for Mick McCarthy’s team who won their first match of the currently English Premier League season against Stoke City. Following the
win against the Potters, Wolves travelled to the Merseyside region to face Everton in a match that eventually ended in a scored draw as both the teams got a goal each.
In their third Premier League match, Wolves played Newcastle United at their home ground i.e. Molineux Stadium in an encounter which eventually ended in a one all draw between the two English club sides. Wolves were dealt their first
defeat of the new English Premier League season by Fulham in their fourth match of the league campaign as the Cottagers won the match at the Craven Cottage by two goals to one. Wolves also lost their last English Premier League match against Tottenham at the
White Hart Lane as Spurs scored two late goals to turn a one all draw into a three one win.
Currently Wolverhampton are 15th in the English Premier League table as they have won one, drawn two and lost two matches out of their total five matches. They have gathered five points from five games with a goal difference
of negative two. On the other hand, Aston Villa started off their English league season with a win against West Ham United at the Villa Park. Villa started the season under their caretaker manager, Kevin MacDonald who was a favourite to take over as Aston
Villa’s permanent manager but a bad run of results forced Randy Lerner’s hand to bring in the experience Gerard Houllier in as the team’s first team manager.
Villa are presently 7th in the English Premier League table with seven points from five games. Aston Villa have won two, drawn two and lost one out of their last five matches in the English league and have goal difference
of negative three at the moment. Villa’s biggest defeat of the season came at Saint James’s Park when the newly promoted Newcastle United shipped six goals past Villa’s leaky defence. What added insult to injury was the fact that Villa were not even able
to score a single goal during the match as they lost six nil to the Magpies.
Last season, both the teams came out with a point each from this corresponding fixture but Villa will be looking to better that when they visit the Molineux Stadium on Sunday, 26th of September, 2010. A disappointing fact
for the Wolves fans will be that their team has failed to win in any of their last eight Premier League meetings between the two sides. Aston Villa’s last victory at the Molineux Stadium came way back in 2004, when the Villains smashed four goals past Wolves
to gain four goals to nil win.
This encounter is anticipated to be a difficult one for both the sides but Villa will be buoyant under their new manager and thus they considered to be the favourites to get all three points from their visit to Wolverhampton Wanderers
home stadium
