English Premier League – Match review: West Bromwich Albion versus Newcastle United (Part 1)
The match kicked off at a comfortable pace for Newcastle but it was West Brom at home who proved to be the better of the two competing from the start. West Bromwich forced the first corner of the match as Gutierrez blocked a West Bromwich
Albion cross from the right hand side. However, the corner during 6th minute was a poor one as Brunt’s ball in didn’t even make it past the first man in the Newcastle defence.
West Bromwich Albion looked to play with width and get some crosses into the Newcastle box to test the likes of Sol Campbell and Steven Taylor. Early on, these crosses weren’t accurate enough to trouble the two English centre backs who
dealt with most of the balls thrown at them, adequately.
West Bromwich Albion were impeccable in their build up play towards the Newcastle penalty area but they fell short when it came to the final ball. Roberto Di Matteo’s team did exceptionally well to keep the visitors on the back foot for
the first ten minutes as Newcastle hardly had a look in towards the home team’s goal.
In the 32nd minute of the match, West Bromwich Albion finally took the lead after a steady spell of possession. Thomas was the man who created the goal in reality as he was tackled by the Newcastle defence, the
loose ball then fell to Morrison who played in Tchoyi.
The Cameroonian midfielder found himself in space and he made full use of it as he curled the ball with his left foot into the back of the Newcastle net as Krul was helpless with the wonderful finish. The midfielder’s goal gave West Brom
the lead as the score line reached 1-0.
In the 37th minute, Tchoyi almost doubled West Brom’s lead as he was played in by Thomas. However, Krul was on guard to make a good save as the Cameroonian midfielder was denied his second goal of the match.
It was a good save by Krul but a save that one would’ve expected the young goalie to make. West Bromwich ended the half strongly after getting the opening goal as they kept Newcastle on the back foot. Thus the first half ended soon after
with West Bromwich Albion in the lead thanks to a marvellous finish by Tchoyi.
The second half commenced with a Newcastle United substitution as Lovenkrands replaced Ameobi in Newcastle’s attack soon after the visitors had a corner kick. The corner kick that was played in by Gutierrez found Andy Carroll but the English
national failed to keep his header on target as the ball went out of play for a goal kick for the home side.
In the 56th minute of the match, referee brandished his yellow card and showed it to Jose Enrique for his deliberately late challenge on Tchoyi. In the 59thminute, Gutierrez raced away as he found himself
in a one on one situation with Scott Carson, the West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper. The Argentinean midfielder dinked the ball over the diving goalie but West Bromwich’s left back was at hand to clear the ball off the goal line to keep his side in the lead.
In the 62nd minute of the match, Danny Guthrie was shown the yellow card by the referee for what looked like a two footed challenge on the goal scorer Tchoyi. It was a bad tackle which deserved a red card on another
day but the referee was lenient with the Newcastle midfielder as he just cautioned him.
