English Premier League – Match review: West Bromwich Albion versus Newcastle United (Part 2)
In the 64th minute of the encounter, Gutierrez found himself in space after he was played in by Sol Campbell. The Argentinean produced an accurate cross which was heading for Lovenkrands in the West Brom penalty
area. However, Scott Carson spotted danger and the ex-Liverpool goalkeeper rushed out to tip the ball away from the incoming striker.
In the 66th minute, buoyant from his goal in the first half, Tchoyi tired his luck on Newcastle’s goal with a good shot but Krul was equal to the effort from the outside the penalty area as he held onto the drive.
Newcastle United resorted to counter attacking football in the second half as West Brom tried to keep hold of the ball.
In the 67th minute, Newcastle had a glorious chance to get their equalizer as Sol Campbell connected with a free kick with his header. However, the ex-Tottenham man was way ward with his header as the ball went
wide of the mark for a goal kick.
In the 71st minute of the match, Peter Odemwingie was the hero for West Bromwich Albion as he pounced on a mistake from Danny Guthrie. The midfielder lost the ball near the centre circle as Odemwingie took control
and then rushed up field.
The ex-Russia league star outpaced Sol Campbell and used Morrison’s run as a disguise as he produced a prolific finish to beat Krul by slotting the ball into the far post. Odemwingie’s goal gave West Bromwich Albion a two goal lead. In
the 72nd minute of the match, Alan Smith came on the field in place of the injured Guthrie. In the 74th minute, the newcomer Smith was booked by the referee after he tackled Thomas in aggressive fashion.
In the 78th minute, Giles Barnes was introduced by Roberto Di Matteo on field in place of Jerome Thomas. The crowd gave Thomas a standing ovation due to his immaculate performance in the first half of the match
for the Baggies.
In the 84th minute, Sol Campbell went into the referee’s book for a foul on Giles Barnes. The ex-Arsenal defender was cautioned as a result as Newcastle’s players seemed frustrated due to the fact that they were
two goals down.
In the 85th minute, Simon Cox replaced James Morrison for West Bromwich Albion as Roberto Di Matteo looked to give some rest to his key players as the result was already in the bag. However, Newcastle’s misery was
compounded by Odemwingie’s second goal which came in the 89th minute.
Newcastle’s defence was split open by a long ball that Odemwingie latched onto. He then rushed past Krul before sliding the ball into the back of the net as West Bromwich Albion took a three goal lead at the Hawthorns stadium.
In the 92nd minute, Newcastle United got their consolation goal as West Bromwich’s defence allowed Andy Carroll to get an unmarked header off, which was saved by Carson hut the rebound was buried by Lovenkrands
as the score line reached 3-1. At the full time whistle, West Bromwich Albion ended up as eventual winners through goals from Odemwingie and Tchoyi. It was a solid performance by the Baggies which put a smile on Roberto Di Matteo’s face in the end.
