English Premier League News: Arsene Wenger assesses Fabregas injury; charged by FA
Arsenal are, in terms of injury woes, an incredibly unlucky side. There is a lot of talent at Arsene Wenger’s disposal but freak injuries continue to haunt the progress of Wenger’s team. 3 years ago, there was Eduardo’s famous broken leg. Then, Nasri
also broke his leg and after Euro 2008, new singing Thomas Rozisky missed almost 2 seasons. Just last week young prodigy Theo Walcott, who had scored his first hat trick for Arsenal, was stretchered off while playing for
England. And now there is a fresh new injury to the Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas.
Commenting on Fabregas’ injury, Arsene Wenger said that it’s far too early to determine when Fabregas will be able to return from his hamstring injury.
The Spanish World Cup winning midfielder suffered the injury while playing against
Sunderland on Saturday. He pulled his hamstring soon after scoring a freak goal from 40 yards out.
Sunderland defender Anton Ferdinand in an effort to clear the ball kicked it straight to Cesc and it rebounded off Fabregas, only to loop over the
Sunderland keeper and into the back of the net.
Fabregas had just been getting back in form, following a late return from the World Cup. Theo Walcott, Robin van Persie and the Danish striker Nicklas Bendtner are all out with injuries. Losing another influential player for a considerable period of
time would be a huge blow to Wenger’s team and their silverware ambitions.
Speaking to Arsenal TV Online ahead of the Carling Cup third-round tie at Tottenham, Wenger said: "We don't know yet. It is difficult to say. He has a hamstring problem but I can't tell how long he will be out for. Any speculation would be wrong because
we have not had the scan."
Cesc Fabregas was not expected to be part of the team in Carling Cup, as the manager had decided to go the usual route of playing young non-first team squad players in CC games.
Meanwhile, the Arsenal manager has been charged by the FA for improper conduct after his actions at the Stadium of light.
The Arsenal boss was furious after his side had let in a dramatic late equalizer in stoppage time.
Wenger was seen patting the match official Martin Atkinson on the back, as the goal had actually been scored 15 seconds after the officially allotted 4 minutes of stoppage time. Darren Bent was the man who scored the all important goal for
Sunderland. Wenger did not stop there and continued to bash the referee in his post match comments.
If the manager does not decide to contest the charge and accepts it, then he would face a touchline ban for one match and an 8,000 pound fine. This is according to the new fast-track disciplinary procedures introduced by FA.
There was a statement made by the FA on its website stating, "Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been charged with using insulting and/or abusive language and behaviour amounting to improper conduct.”
"The charges relate to Wenger's conduct towards match officials at the conclusion of Arsenal's match against
Sunderland on September 18.”
"Under the FA's new fast-track procedures, Wenger has until Thursday, September 23 to respond to the charge and he has been offered a standard sanction of a one-match touchline ban and an £8,000 fine should he accept the charge.”
The statement added that if Wenger does not accept the charges and decides to contest them, he would have to face a hearing by a Regulatory Commission.
