English Premier League News: The biggest winners from this past weekend’s fixtures
It was another exciting week in the Premier League, where Manchester United survived a late scare in their game at Old Trafford against Liverpool and Chelsea gave another imperious performance to thrash Blackpool 4-0.
Here is a list of some of the biggest winners of the week:
Dimitar Berbatov
No one can be a bigger winner this week than Dimitar Berbatov, as he continues his rejuvenation at Old Trafford after two not-so-wonderful seasons. So far this season Berbatov has scored 6 goals from 5 games and three of those
came at the weekend against United’s bitter rivals, Liverpool. At a time when Wayne Rooney is not firing on all cylinders, Berba’s goals are coming in real handy for United as they look to keep the pressure on Chelsea.
Before the start of the season it was speculated that Berba will be sold to some team in Europe after he had failed to live up to his price tag of 30 million pounds, but just 5 games into the season and the Old Trafford faithful
finally seem to be warming up to him.
Florent Malouda
A midfielder scoring 6 goals in 5 games is a remarkable feat and when the midfielder is Florent Malouda it looks even better. Under previous Chelsea managers, Malouda had somewhat failed to live up to his reputation as he was constantly
in and out of the team. But under Carlo Ancelotti, Malouda has found new self-belief and is delivering the goods. Perhaps it’s that it’s the Chelsea team that makes everything look so beautiful, but credit where it’s due. Malouda has hit the ground running
this season and hats off to him for that.
Carlos Tevez
There were never any doubts about the talent of the hot headed Argentinean but under Mancini he is performing outstandingly well. Tevez leads the multi-million pound City attack and keeps Adebayor on the bench, and with his indefatigable
performances on the pitch he is fast becoming one of the best strikers in the world. It was his goal at the weekend that opened the scoring for City against Wigan and it was his cross that was sent goal bound by Yaya Toure. Since his West Ham days, the striker
has definitely come up in leaps and bounds.
Manchester City
City are currently sitting pretty at 4th spot in the Premier League but can they really hold on to that position if they keep playing so many defensive midfielders in one team? Although City are one of the big winners
of the weekend, even the smallest of mistakes can spell doomsday for Mancini; and the Italian is certainly not playing a loveable brand of football. And the moment he gets the results wrong, he will be shown the door.
Darren Bent
His stats just keep improving and impressing. So far he has scored four goals in five Premier League appearances this season and his late equalizer against Arsenal secured a priceless draw for his side. His 27 goals from 43 matches
for Sunderland include winners and equalizers against Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City.
Rafael van der Vaart
At the age of 32, RDV still doesn’t fail to impress all and sundry with his untiring displays. He was one of the top performers for Spurs at the weekend and in times of such inflated prices, Redknapp’s nabbing of RDV for a mere
8 million pounds looks like a shrewd deal.
