English Premier League News Update: Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspurs
Carragher confident without Gerrard
Jamie Carragher, the Liverpool defender, insisted that the Reds can beat Tottenham this weekend even though they will be without star skipper Steven Gerrard. Gerrard limped out of England’s 2-1 defeat to France towards the end of the match
at Wembley. That was two weeks ago, but the England international will be sidelined for another two weeks.
Liverpool have had a very poor start to the season and will miss their influential captain this weekend. However, Jamie Carragher is confident that Roy Hodgson’s side can beat the Spurs this Sunday at White Hart Lane. Tottenham featured
in the Champions League during midweek and will be somewhat weakened, depending on which players Harry Redknapp chooses to play.
Carragher said that Gerrard would be missed but insisted that Liverpool could cope, he said, “There’s no doubt Steven will be missed whether we win, lose or draw because he is such an important player here. Everyone
knows what great quality Steven has got and it’s frustrating for everyone, though nobody more than him, that he is out because he has been in such good form.”
The Liverpool defender said, “But it’s up to us to perform well and lessen the impact, like when we beat Spurs in January without him and Fernando. There are a few similarities because that game came a few days after
a disappointing result against Stoke when we drew 1-1, but we showed we could bounce back.”
Dawson Returns to Training for Tottenham
Tottenham’s defender Michael Dawson has given Harry Redknapp a reason to be cheerful ahead of the clash against Liverpool, he has returned to training and will most likely feature in the fixture of the weekend.
Tottenham have recently been in excellent form, the Spurs thwarted arch rivals Arsenal away from home in a stunning comeback, for the first time in over seventeen years. They also guaranteed a place in the knock out stages of the Champions
League during mid week.
Redknapp announced that Dawson would be back in training with Tottenham today. He said while speaking to reporters, “It's great news. We've missed Michael and having him back is a major boost. The lads will welcome
him back.”
The 26-year-old had to be stretchered off against Bulgaria at Wembley all the way in September; he was diagnosed with knee ligament damage. Recently Dawson had become an important part of Spurs defence and his return will be welcomed.
