English Premier League: Phil Thompson backs Joe Cole
Several ex-Liverpool players have come out and backed the former Chelsea midfielder to usher in a new era of success at the Merseyside club. Liverpool recently parted ways with Rafael Benitez, who was in charge at the club for the past six years.
Benitez brought in many players during his time at the club but very few of them made an impact. Only two of his various signings in the shape of Mascherano and Torres, made an impact. Joe Cole was chased by clubs such as Arsenal and Tottenham but these clubs were not able to complete their pursuit of the England international because of his wage demands.
Liverpool have agreed to pay Joe Cole around 90,000 pounds per week for his services to the club. Joe Cole has been criticized by Chelsea’s manager Carlo Ancelloti for being too greedy when it comes to his wage demands. The former A.C Milan coach said that troubles between the club and Joe Cole were because of his financial demands.
Roy Hodgson who is Liverpool’s new manager successfully convinced Joe Cole to sign up for the reds. Cole’s arrival at Liverpool will be a big boost to the likes of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, both of whom were considered moves away from the English club.
Thompson, the ex-Liverpool coach told Skysports that, he was absolutely delighted that his former club has signed Joe Cole. He said that Liverpool, need a player who can be a catalyst between the attack and the defense. Thompson also stated that, Joe had the same ability as Torres and Gerrard, the ability to create something out of nothing during the football match.
Liverpool’s summer was looking quite bleak after they had lost Benayoun to Chelsea and Insua to Fiorentina. Liverpool’s defensive midfielder Mascherano has already been targeted by Inter Milan who are quite determined to sign the Argentinean. Liverpool’s striker Fernando Torres had lately come out and said that the club needed to sign more quality player so that Liverpool can challenge for the a spot at the top of the English Premier League table.
Cole’s signing has also been admired by the Liverpool legend Ian Rush. Rush said that, Liverpool have not been as successful as they wanted to be over the past decade but he still praised the clubs ability to attract foreign and English superstars such as Joe Cole.
He said that Cole’s signing will send out a message to the rest of the Premier League telling them that the Merseyside club means business. David Fairclough, the former Liverpool striker also expressed his happiness at Cole’s signature at Liverpool. He said that, it is positive news for the club and shows that the club still intends to sign famous players.
David also elaborated by saying that, Cole has the capability to provide support to the strikers and also has been a threat to Liverpool every time he has played against them. He also stated that, Liverpool fans will like Joe Cole and cheer him on during the Merseyside club’s games.
