English Premier League - Player Profile: Gary Cahill
Cahill is a professional footballer who plays for Bolton Wanderers in the English Premier League, Gary is a defensive player and mostly plays at the center back position in the defensive. He is also an English international footballer.
Gary started his football career at AFC Dronfield, which is a Sunday league amateur team in Derbyshire. He played at the non-professional club until he was fifteen years old. Cahill then started training with Derby County’s youth academy shortly after he left AFC Dronfield. At his time with Derby’s youth setup, the young Englishman signed for Aston Villa’s academy.
At Villa, Cahill was immediately sent on loan to a lower league club called Burnley. He spent less than a complete season with Burnley and through his performances at the club, Garry won the club’s player of the year award and also the young player of the award. During his loan spell with Burnley, the young English defender scored his first goal for them in their encounter against Stoke City.
After returning back to Aston Villa from his loan spell to Burnley, Cahill made his debut for the Birmingham club in a five nil humiliating defeat to Manchester United in an English Premier League game. His first derby match for Villa was against their rivals West Bromwich Albion on 9th of April, 2006.
Perhaps Garry’s most impressive goal for Aston Villa which was also his first for the Premier League club came against Birmingham City, he executed a perfect over head kick and Villa went onto win the match by three goals to one. Cahill started the next season with Villa with injury troubles, Martin Laursen took advantage of this position and cemented his place in Villas regular starting lineup. Garry recovered in time to play in the 2006-2007 season but Villa did not give him many opportunities to showcase his brilliant talent.
On 19th of September, 2007, Cahill left Villa and joined Sheffield United on a three month loan deal, this deal was agreed by both the clubs so that the English defender can get more first team experience. His debut for United came during their three goals to two defeat against Crystal Palace. He scored his first goal for the Sheffield club against Stoke City on 10th of November, 2007.
In December of 2007, under the terms of his loan deal Cahill returned to Villa Park after he had played sixteen games and scored two goals during his appearances at the club. At Villa, Garry failed to make regular first team appearances again, therefore frustration and transfer speculation surrounded the his future at Aston Villa.
On 30th of January, 2008, Cahill agreed a three and a half year deal contract with Bolton Wanderers. In February 2008, Cahill made his debut for Bolton against Reading, a match they won by two goals to nil. Fans at the Reebok Stadium, which is Bolton’s home stadium, have become huge admirers of the young Englishman ever since his arrival from the Aston Villa.
His performances in the 2009-2010 season were quite impressive and he was close to making it to the English national team’s squad for the FIFA 2010 World Cup but he failed to make it to the final twenty three team squad.
