English Premier League Recap: Part 1 – the weekend's losers
Every weekend, Premier League stars take to the field and try to help their respective teams come out on top at the end of ninety minutes. However, there can only be one winner and one loser at the end of the ninety minutes. Here is a look at the losers
from the previous week of matches.
Everton: Many people strongly believed that Everton were going to be back to their best, ever since they pulled a magical comeback against Manchester United. However that theory has been put to rest after last weekend’s matches. Everton’s
performance this past weekend against Newcastle, was on the borderline of being desperate. The only real chance that the team created was in the ninety third minute and that too was wasted.
What’s remarkable is that the team did not create a single chance prior to that against a team that was being voted as one of the favourites to be relegated this season. It is also not possible to think that the team has had a bad start to the season, since
it appears as though the team has still not really kicked off their season this term.
Most of the blame falls on the managers shoulders. David Moyes opted to use his single striker formation, despite the fact that his star strikers and make shift strikers were all absent from the sides match this past weekend. The manager could have opted
for a more defensive formation and could have perhaps salvages a single point form the game, but his inability to cope to the absence of Tim Cahill proved to be the main reason the team failed to win or even draw against Newcastle.
Mikel Arteta: Mikel Arteta, was on the verge of joining the English national side till the news that he couldn’t do so was revealed to the player and the rest of the world. The player is quite possibly one of the best midfielders in the
Premier League. He has also time and time again been the saviour of Everton. However the news that the player might have no future on the international stage seems to have started to take its toll on the players mind. Arteta was a name that wasn’t mentioned
even once during the highlight reel of the Everton-Newcastle match. Some people believe that this is a clear indication that the player has finally managed to fall from grace and will now struggle to get back to his former best.
This is really bad news for Everton as well. The team was highly dependent on Arteta in the game against United, where they surged a remarkable comeback in the dying minutes of the match. However with Arteta not pulling the strings in the middle of the pitch
like he used to against Newcastle the team failed to perform like they were expected to. This means that Everton have turned into a one dimensional one player team and with that player failing to perform at his best the team is falling all around him.
The team and the fans will be hoping that Arteta can get his head straight sooner rather than later, so he is back to his former best once again.
