English Premier League Roundup: Arsenal - Nov 2nd, 2010
Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger has asked his players to keep focus, even if they do manage to reach the Champions League round of 16 by defeating Shakhtar Donetsk. Arsenal would be making their way to Ukraine having a 100% win record following their destructive
form in Group H, where they made a record of scoring 14 goals in 3 fixtures.
The last time these two sides met was at the Emirates Stadium a few weeks ago, where Arsenal thrashed Shakhtar 5-1. Another result like that would take the 13 time Premier League Champions into the next round of the Champions league. However, Wenger wants
his side to be completely focused on the task at hand and not let anything distract them.
"I do not know if that [qualification] had an effect, but it was [previously] linked with some average Premier League performances. However, we will take care of that, because we know it is a danger that can happen. We have a very technical team and that
suits the Champions League, especially in the group stage, where we have technical superiority. We feel that is our natural level. We have the confidence to beat teams, and that makes the difference”, stated the Arsenal coach.
Arsenal managed a narrow 1-0 victory over West Ham United last week in the Premier League, which saw them move to the 2nd spot there. The Gunners are in good form this season and would want to keep in their stride in order to keep advancing in
the Champions League as well as the Premier League. The manager is happy with the current status of his side, especially having so many in-form midfielders. The side is not depending on any one player this season and sharing the goal load around the entire
side.
The side however hasn’t won a single trophy in five years and would be looking to get their hands on any silverware. That was the major reason behind Wenger choosing to play a strong squad in the League Cup against Newcastle. Arsenal managed to register
a 4-0 victory in the league cup and now have to face Wigan in the next round.
Distractions have been the major reason behind Arsenal’s poor form in the Premier League as well as other cup competitions. The manager has pointed out that fact and wants his players to become focused on every match as the cup final.
