English Premier League: Sir Alex Ferguson Approves of Obertan
Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he is impressed with Gabriel Obertan’s displays for Manchester United so far. Obertan was signed by Manchester United in the 2009 summer transfer window and has played many first team games for them up till now. Obertan is part of the United squad which is currently visiting U.S.A, Canada and Mexico as a part of their pre-season preparations.
The full football season including the English Premier League, starts off on the 14th of August and Manchester United play their first league game against Newcastle United, who were promoted to the Premier League only last season after winning the football Championship.
Obertan started off his football career in his native country France with Patin, which was only a small time local club, before he joined Paris F.C in the year 2002. After spending 12 months at Paris F.C, he joined another Paris club named, Paris Saint-Germain. After training for a year with the club, Obertan joined the Clairefontaine football academy.
Bordeaux’s scouts spotted Obertan’s talent while he was at the Clairefontaine academy and took him to Bordeaux, where he continued his training as a professional footballer. In 2006, Obertan signed his first professional contract as a footballer with the French club; the contract was scheduled to keep him at the club till 2009. He had his debut for the club in a league match against Valenciennes.
In 2009, Obertan was sent on loan to Lorient. Obertan made fifteen appearances for Lorient and scored only once. The French winger had less and less first team appearances at Bordeaux and on July 8th Obertan officially signed for Manchester United, his transfer fee was believed to be around three million pounds. Obertan signed a four year deal with the English club.
Obertan, who is also known as Gabby in more familiar terms at Manchester United, scored his first senior goal for the club recently, in their friendly match against Philadelphia Union. United’s long standing manager Sir Alex has praised the winger following his impressive display in the friendly match. Fergie said that, Gabby always has the capacity to score a goal or two during the match.
He also added that, the best aspect of Obertan’s goal was the timing of his run and the timing of the pass which was played in by his team mate Danny Wellbeck. Ferguson stated that, it was a very good goal and a well taken goal.
Ferguson has a long history of making superstars out of young players. In the past he has taken teenagers such as David Beckham, Ronaldo, Scholes and Giggs and turned them into complete footballers. The Scotsman also explained the importance of pre season games as he said that, they help the players improve their rhythm and tempo.
He also stated that Union played really well against his side and that they made it difficult for Manchester United to play proper football. Ferguson also commented on the atmosphere at the stadium for the pre-season game and said that there were a lot of United supporters. He said that football’s appreciation has increased in U.S.A over the past four years.
