English Premier League: Sir Alex Ferguson terms Saturday as a good day for United
Sir Alex has come out and stated that Saturday was a good day for Manchester United as they won their game against Wigan Athletic and went joint top of the league table with Chelsea. On Saturday, Chelsea lost their away outing at Saint
Andrews stadium to Birmingham City whereas Arsenal gave up a two goal lead over Spurs on the same day at the Emirates stadium to lose 3-2.
It turned out to be a perfect day for Manchester United who won against Wigan by two goals to nil. In the match they were helped by some generous refereeing decisions as Wigan had two of their players sent off in the second half of the
match. Nonetheless, the victory was capped off by the return to fitness of Manchester United’s star striker, Wayne Rooney who was introduced into the match in the second half as a substitute.
Ferguson said, "It has been a good day for us, no question of that. If you had said at the start of the day would you take being joint top of the league I would have said 'yes'. We know that come the second half of the season we will definitely
get better and now we are joint top with Chelsea."
Speaking about the reception that Manchester United’s striker got on his return to fitness from the home crowd, Sir Alex added, "That [the reception] was good - that will be pleasing for him, settle him down and make him realize he is
at the right club, no doubt about that. It was a quiet comeback, he got involved in a few of the bits of interplay but in the main he just needed those 25 minutes or so. He will play against Rangers on Wednesday and that will be the perfect match for him to
come back and get 90 minutes."
Manchester United’s manager was not surprised at the fact that two of Wigan’s players were sent off during the encounter. He said, "I thought Wigan were very aggressive, they had a lot of real aggressive challenges tested the referee throughout
the game. They put themselves about. The centre-back [Alcaraz] had a few tackles and fouls in the first half and when you do that you ride your luck and it was a silly challenge on Darren Fletcher, who was going back toward his own goal. The second one [Rodallega]
I thought the boy was off the ground but I need to see it again."
Sir Alex had left out Dimitar Berbatov from the squad that faced Wigan. The Bulgarian was not on the bench and nowhere near the starting line up as Federico Macheda and Gabriel Obertan led the line for United. Ferguson confirmed that it
wasn’t an injury to Dimitar which forced his hand when it came to team selection. The Scotsman said, "I just left him out - picking my subs today I just thought I had to give a different type of variety."
On the other hand, Roberto Martinez the Wigan manager also spoke about the match. The Spaniard stated, "Everything was going according to plan - we looked really resilient and strong and were frustrating Manchester United and we looked
like the team who were going to score. But we allowed the frustration to develop and that knocked our concentration. When you go down to eight outfield players it's easy to capitulate but be showed real character and steel to form the basis for a good platform
for the future."
Manchester United play their next competitive fixture, next week against Rangers in mid-week at the Ibrox Stadium in Scotland as a part of the UEFA Champions League’s group stages.
