English Premier League: Sir Alex terms Chelsea meetings as deciders
Sir Alex Ferguson has come out and made it clear that his team’s matches against Chelsea will decide the destination of the English Premier League title in the 2010-2011 English Premier League season. It has been an average start
for the former English champions so far as Manchester United have drawn two games and won the rest of their five matches so far.
In their last match against Liverpool, Manchester United gave up a two goal lead at first but then finally got their third goal to win the match by the score line of three goals to two. It was a memorable win for the Red Devils as
Dimitar Berbatov became the first Manchester United player in over sixty four years to net a hatrick against their Merseyside rivals. United’s main problem in the 2010-2011 season has been their lack of defensive coordination as on two occasions, away at Fulham
and away at Everton, Ferguson’s men gave up their lead to settle for an eventual draw.
Last night, Sir Alex’s team travelled to Scunthorpe United to play their Carling Cup’s third round fixture, Ferguson himself was not present at the match as he was away in Spain to watch United’s next UEFA Champions League opponents,
Valencia in action against Atletico Madrid. Ferguson’s second in command, his assistant manager Mike Phelan was in-charge of United for the Carling Cup tie in which youngsters like Bebe and Gibson shined for the Red Devils. Last season, Manchester United ended
up as runners up in the English Premier League by just a point, in doing so they failed to win their fourth straight Premier League title as Chelsea were crowned as the Champions.
In the 2009-2010 season, Chelsea defeated Manchester United at Old Trafford and at Stamford Bridge as well, something that United will be looking to put right this season. Speaking to CNN, Ferguson said that, English Premier League
is the most difficult league in the world because there are so many top quality teams. In this season’s Premier League the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City are also looking as title contenders but Ferguson’s focus on the current league leaders and champions,
Chelsea. Sir Alex said that, he always takes a look at the team that won the league the year before, as it gives him and his team a target to work towards at.
Ferguson added that, it is up to the teams who are chasing Chelsea to raise their game as the Blues are the current Champions. He also said that, Chelsea have had a good start to the season so according to him, they are the main danger
to Manchester United’s hopes of winning a nineteenth English league title. Fergie, as Sir Alex is more affectionately known amongst United’s fans further commented that, the games that will decide the title are most likely the ones that Manchester United will
play against Chelsea. He highlighted the fact that, the games last year United lost those games and therefore lost the title to Chelsea. Ferguson also spoke about his team’s rivals in the UEFA Champions League, he pointed out the fact that Real Madrid will
improve greatly under Jose Mourinho.
The long standing manager also praised Barcelona by terming them as the most attractive team in the world but he also said that Inter Milan will be the most difficult team to beat in this year’s, UEFA Champions League. Ferguson remarked
that all the big names in the Champions League have their own different qualities that’s why teams look forward to playing in the prestigious European tournament. Manchester United travel to Bolton Wanderers on the up-coming weekend to play their sixth league
match of the season, whereas Chelsea host Manchester City in what is expected to be a cracking encounter at the Stamford Bridge.
