English Premier League: Statistics and Figures – Part 5
Harry Redknapp’s Tottenham rose to new heights last season, as the Spurs qualified for the UEFA Champions League by finishing fourth in the English Premier League table. However their start to this season’s league campaign has
not been ideal. Tottenham have already been knocked out of the Carling Cup after they suffered a humiliating four goals to one defeat by their North London rivals Arsenal at the White Hart Lane. Nonetheless, Tottenham will be looking to get their season back
on track when they face West Ham United in their next English Premier League fixture.
Presently, 5th in the English Premier League table, Tottenham won their last league match by three goals to one against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Nonetheless, it should not be forgotten that in the 2010-2011 season, Tottenham
have a terrible goal to shot conversion ratio as they have only converted 10 % of their total shots into goals in comparison, Chelsea’s goal to shot success rate is much higher at 27%. Gareth Bale, Tottenham’s left back turned left winger has been on fire
for the Spurs so far, in his five Premier League appearances for Tottenham this season; he has created thirteen goal scoring opportunities for his team mates.
Tottenham however do face difficultly in their striking department. As Jermaine Defoe is injured for the London club, Harry Redknapp used Roman Pavlyuchenko against Wolves in the Premier League. Roman did pay back his manager’s
trust but it was the Russian’s first Premier League goal against Wolves in a total number of thirteen appearances against the Wanderers.
Conversely, West Bromwich Albion, the English Premier League’s newcomers have been on terrific form but given their status as a yo-yo club, the Midlands club is destined for a tough relegation battle once again. Currently, West
Bromwich are 10th in the English Premier League table as they defeated Birmingham City in their last English Premier League encounter. It was West Brom’s first victory over their midlands rivals since March 2005, which makes it their first midlands
derby triumph in over five years.
West Bromwich Albion’s Marc Antoine Fortune played a total of forty five minutes against Birmingham. However, the former Celtic striker was only able to complete eight passes in these forty five minutes and failed to get even attempt
a single shot. A much brighter statistic for West Bromwich is the fact that Albion have not lost even a single game at the Hawthorn’s stadium since their defeat to Nottingham Forest all the way back in January of 2010 in the Championship.
Another team which might be struggling for their survival in the English Premier League come May of 2011 is West Ham United. The Hammers have had a horrible start to their English Premier League campaign under Avram Grant. They
still have to register their first victory of the season and in their last league match against Stoke City, Grant’s men only managed a scored draw. West Ham have an even more disappointing shot to goal conversation ratio than Tottenham. They have only scored
with three of their total fifty six attempted shots thus the Hammers have only a goal to shot success rate of around 5%.
Scott Parker has been a bright spot for West Ham thus far, he is one of the most prolific tacklers in the English Premier League as the Englishman has won eighteen out of this twenty two attempted tackles in the 2010-2011 season.
Carlton Cole, who is West Ham’s main target man only completed 46% of his total passes at Stoke City on Saturday, it was a disappointing display of wretched distribution by the former Chelsea player who has steadily declined in quality ever since his transfer
to West Ham.
