English Premier League: Weekend Awards for Week 11
Week 11 saw 30 goals being scored and some nail biting finishes to the games. Here are some of the worthy winners of Bettor.com awards for this weekend:
Game of the Weekend = Bolton 4-2 Tottenham:
This game really came to life in the second half. 1-0 to Bolton at half time, we expected a final score line of 1-1; how wrong we were. 5 more goals were scored in the next 45 minutes in a thrilling encounter. Gretar Steinsson struck a quality goal and Bolton
soon thought to have 3 points in the pocket when the outstanding Davies slotted home from the penalty spot.
Tottenham then sparked some sort of a comeback through Alan Hutton’s great individual effort and an absolutely stunning volley from Roman Pavlyuchenko. It was all set up for a great finale at 3-2.
However, substitute Petrov scored in the 90th minute to ensure a calm finish to the game for Bolton fans and secured all three points for the Trotters.
Notable Mention: Liverpool 2-0 Chelsea
Another cracking game of football as two quality goals from Fernando Torres set up an important win for the home side. Champions failed to stamp their authority and the game finished 2-0.
Player of the Weekend = Kevin Davies:
He seems to be getting better with age, another display of pure determination from the Bolton skipper. He ran the Spurs' defence ragged, scoring twice and setting one up for his team mate. His first goal might have been offside but his quickly taken shot
from the edge of the box was a finish of a striker in form. His second was a penalty and in the dying stages of the game, his deft header allowed Petrov to put the game to bed.
His all round display throughout the 90 minutes made him our Player of the Weekend.
Notable Mention: Fernando Torres
Fernando Torres was just edged out by the Bolton skipper for this award. Torres' two goals were worthy of winning any game of football. He looked sharp and agile. After the criticism that he has received, this performance proves again that Fernando Torres
is a big game player and it was only a matter of time before the Hit man returns to top form.
Team Performance of the Weekend = Newcastle United:
5th in the table and ahead of the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham says it all. Now, three wins on the trot including derby thrashing of Sunderland and well, an away win at Emirates sums it up. Chris Houghton was one of the under fire managers
but how quickly can things change around. His men showed grit, determination and passion throughout the 90 minutes and were worthy winners. Andy Carroll continued to impress and notched up the winning goal courtesy of another “Flappy-handski” (Fabianski) error.
An away win at Emirates would generally mean a top drawer performance but if that is done by a newly promoted side than surely it would have to be something special and special it was.
Notable Mention: Liverpool
Third time unlucky, the club has somehow been second best in all our awards so far this weekend, but this still is a big achievement for Liverpool, considering the kind of season they have had so far. It was a resolute performance from every single player
on the pitch and they fully deserved all three points against an in form Chelsea side. Lucas Leiva deserves a mention as none of the Liverpool fans would have missed Javier Mascherano last night, who had made a habit of performing in games like these.
Goal of the Weekend = Fernando Torres:
Finally, an award for the Liverpool team, and Fernando Torres it is who claims it. Both of his goals were a contender for the award but his second left everyone in the Blue shirt stranded. Raul Meireles found the Liverpool forward just outside of the box
on the left hand side. He dribbled in and then created a minor space for him to strike the ball. His curler was firmly struck and went between Ivanovic, Terry and Cech and all of them could only watch the inch perfect strike form the Spaniard, dazzle the back
of the net. A goal only a top player can score.
Notable Mention: Roman Pavlyuchenko
The Russian scored his third goal in the league. It was a sweetly struck volley which gave the Spurs' fans a glimmer of hope. He concentrated on a high dropping ball before executing his perfectly struck volley which flew past the goal keeper. It was a goal
which was worthy of winning any game but unfortunately for the Russian his strike could not spark a comeback.
