English Premier League: Wigan seek new recruits as Pavlyuchenko seeks a loan move
Wigan’s manager, Roberto Martinez has signaled his intent to sign more players for Wigan to strengthen their squad. Wigan were at the end of some very embarrassing score lines during last season’s English Premier League campaign.
Martinez took over at Wigan before the start of the 2009-2010 season and led the club through a relegation dog fight which threatened to drag Wigan down to the depths of English football’s second division i.e. the Championship.
The Spaniard has already recruited two new players for the Latics, first of the new arrivals at the DW Stadium is Mauro Boselli, the striker was bought from Estudiantes and will partner Hugo Rodallega upfront in the Wigan attack.
The second signing for Martinez has been Paraguayan defender, Antolin Alcaraz. However, Wigan have parted ways with their veteran defender, Mario Melchoit. Titus Bramble is also about to leave the club and join ex-Wigan manager Steve Bruce at Sunderland as well.
Commenting about Bramble’s situation at Wigan and his possible transfer to Sunderland for as low as one million dollars, Martinez said that there is nothing to say about Titus Bramble at the moment despite all the talk that has gone on in the press. He added that, Wigan are still looking to improve their squad and the club will do some more business during the summer transfer window.
He also said, that the club has to make up their mind on how many players they actually need to bring into the squad for the upcoming Premier League season. He went on to say that most of Wigan’s business will take place in the later stages of the transfer window.
On the other hand, Tottenham Hotspurs striker Roman Pavlyuchenko is the target of a possible loan move to the Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon. Sporting are looking to bring the Russian striker on loan for the club football season that is about to get underway in less than a month.
Roman’s agent told the Portuguese press that, negotiations are currently underway between Lisbon and Tottenham but Roman’s pay package and the money involved might be a bit too much for the Portuguese club. Pavlyuchenko will be looking to impress this season because in his last season, he rarely got first team opportunities at Tottenham under Harry Redknapp.
The Russian target man is a renowned goal scorer who was brought to the London club by their ex-manager Juan de Ramos. Ramos was replaced by Redknapp during the winter of 2008. Roman’s agent Thomas Zorn remarked that, if Tottenham reject Pavlyuchenko as a player then Sporting will be one of the destinations that the Russian might consider in the near future.
Portuguese press has also claimed that Tottenham are looking for a loan deal which will include Armindo Bangna Bruma, a Sporting based player to be exchanged in return for Roman Pavlyuchenko. The Russian striker was associated with a move away from Tottenham in the last winter transfer window as well which opened up during the 2009-2010 season.
