English Premier League: Winners of the second weekend (Part 3)
Football is quite remarkable as a sport. When Chelsea lost the league to Manchester United in three seasons in a row, many thought that the money experiment that had been initiated at the London club had reached its end before it really hit its peak. Under Mourinho, who is Chelsea’s most celebrated manager to date, the blue lions won two league titles, one league cup and a F.A Cup. Under their latest manager, Carlo Ancelloti, Chelsea have already won a league title and a F.A Cup.
While Manchester United are busy in their decline at the moment, Chelsea have been dishing our heart breaking beatings to any team that has faced them in the past few English Premier League games. It seems for the blues, last season never ended and the World Cup never took place in the summer, as the likes of Drogba, Malouda and Lampard have continued their impervious forms into the new season. In their first league game of the season, Chelsea dispatched West Bromwich Albion at the Stamford Bridge by a score line of six goals to nil.
In their second match of the season, the London blues replicated the same score line against Wigan Athletic, this time away from the Stamford Bridge at the DW Stadium. They have shown such an unprecedented run of goals in the past few seasons at the English Premier League. According to statistics, Chelsea have scored an astonishing amount of twenty nine goals in their last five English Premier League matches.
One cannot blame Chelsea for scoring against relatively weak teams like West Brom and Wigan, as the current English Premier League Champions defeated Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United both home and away in the last league season. However, there might be more to come from the champions, as their next few games might cause their fans to start salivating. In their next match, Chelsea faces Stoke City at Stamford Bridge, then Ancelloti’s side travels across London to face West Ham United. After the Hammers, Chelsea faces Blackpool at home. If they are indeed to retain their trophy this season, then Chelsea will have to score big and achieve wins against the above mentioned teams because after these comparatively easy games.
The blues host Arsenal at the Stamford Bridge and then travel to Eastland’s Stadium to face the money bags, Manchester City. By then, Chelsea’s goal difference as compared to the rest of the league might actually be a representation of the gulf in class that exists between the rest of the contenders and the actual champions.
With the transfer window still open, Chelsea might still add to their squad. The likes of Ramirez still have to make their debut for the blues, something that might come in the next few weeks. What might worry Ancelloti will be the fact that, if Drogba and Lampard get injured, Chelsea’s squad looks short of producing such emphatic performances, as they have been doing up till now. In their match against Wigan, Chelsea looked absolutely dominating, their juggernaut of a starting line up was on the back foot for the first twenty or so minutes of the first half but as time progressed, Chelsea fought their way back into the game and laid Wigan’s hopes of attaining anything from the game to rest.
A player that has stood out for Chelsea over the past season and so far in this season as well is Florent Malouda. Malouda, who was the scorer of France’s only goal at the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, has hit his true form at Chelsea under Ancelloti. In doing so, he has cemented his place as one of the best wingers in modern football, not as flashy as Ronaldo or Ribery but on his day, Florent can be as deadly as anyone.
