English Premier League: Wolverhampton, a giant killing story
Wolverhampton Wanderers might get relegated in May of 2011 but the club has already written its name in the history books of the 2010-2011 Premier League season.
In a league where the elite (read Manchester United, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 and Arsenal) hardly drop any points against the lesser ranked sides, Wolves have time and again provided reality checks to those who look down upon them.
In reality, Wolverhampton have been nothing special this season. They are a typical Premier League outfit, a team which thrive on long balls. Mick McCarthy has programmed his team to put in a good shift even if it means an opportunity
cost of quality football.
Hard work and unflinching system of football ethos is what drives Wolverhampton forward.
In the 2008-2009 club football season, Wolves won the Npower Championship season. In doing so, they secured themselves a place in the 2009-2010 Premier League season. Upon their arrival at the big stage, many pundits wrote off
Wolves as relegation fodder, quite clearly Wolverhampton’s squad was not up to the task of maintaining a place in the English Premier League for another season.
Nonetheless, McCarthy didn’t pay any heed to these experts. In fact he went onto lead his side to a remarkable 15th place finish in the English Premier League.
In the 2010-2011 season, Wolves have faltered terribly. They have given a good fight more often than not but lady luck has not shown down upon Wolverhampton.
Mick McCarthy himself has said time and again that Wolves have been performing very well but their results have not mirrored their performances. Many say that the English Premier League table does not lie after 25 league matches.
Indeed it doesn’t, Wolves are currently inside the relegation as they are ranked 19th out of the 20 teams currently participating in the Premier League.
However at the weekend, Wolves undertook a massive task of giant killing. Sir Alex Ferguson’s team came to the Molineaux stadium in high form after defeating Aston Villa by three goals to one at Old Trafford before that United
had bested Blackpool on their travels by three goals to two. Even before the start of the match, Manchester United were being touted up as definite winners bar a few hiccups.
Regardless, Wolverhampton were unaware of the script it seems. Mick McCarthy’s team covered every inch of grass at their home stadium as they fought back after going a goal down in the opening minutes of the match to win by two
goals to one against the league leaders. It was a humbling experience for the Red Devils but a euphoric one for Wolves.
It was also a sign of consistency for McCarthy’s team who raise their game when pitted against a stronger opponent. Before their win over Manchester United at the weekend Wolves had already claimed famous scalps such as Chelsea,
Manchester City and Liverpool.
Astonishingly enough, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wolves-c40952 fail to show up against teams in the bottom half of the English Premier League table. Wolves have only won 7 matches in the English Premier League this season.
Out of those seven wins two have come against Manchester City, one against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 and one against Chelsea where as the latest one has come against Manchester United.
There has absolutely no doubt that Wolverhampton Wanderers are turning into giant killers, they are the Davids of the English Premier League and Goliaths should be aware of that.
