Alright so I plan to get this ( http://www.statelinetack.com/itemdy00.asp?T1=SLT700633%2014BLK ) Saddle for my horse because I'm switching over to English riding because she will excel higher in it and plus I want to ride English. Right now I ride in a 15 Western Saddle. In the saddle I have shown, what size would I need. Thank you.

  1. Try about seventeen inches.  I ride both English and Western, and I'm the same size as you.

  2. You should measure yourself first.  Take a tape measurer and start at the outside of your leg at your knee then take it all the way up to your hip.  That will give you the proper size English seat size for your saddle.

  3. I would suggest a 17" English saddle.  Looks like a very nice saddle you have picked out!  Most tack shops will allow you to return it at no charge if it is not correct.

  4. How tall are you, how much do you weight? Your average 5'6 rider would need a 16.5 or 17" English saddle. I don't know about Western, so I can't compare the sizing from Western to English

A contour pad should come in the same size choices as the saddle. Most regular schooling pads are either horse or pony size, one-size-fits-all.

UPDATE: I think a 16.5 would be good for you. If you are unsure, you could always go to a tack shop and sit in a few to see which one fits you best :)

  5. DON'T KNOW ABOUT WESTERN REALLY BUT A 16.5 SADDLE IS ALWAYS A GOOD STARTING SIZE, UNLESS YOU ARE VERY SMALL AND THIN.

I HAVE A COUPLE OF MATES IN AMERICA AND ONE OF THEM HAS JUST GOT A HORSE AND WANTED A CHEAP ENGLISH TACK, JUST TO SEE HOW ENGLISH WAS.

SHE BOUGHT THAT AND SHE THINKS THE SADDLE IS GREAT, THE GIRTH IS c**p BUT THE REST IS GOOD QUALITY.

SHE ENDED UP BUYING THIS GIRTH.

BUT IT'S A GREAT BARGIAN IF YOUR STARTING ENGLISH, AND GOOD LUCK!OH AND I WOULD GET THE SIZE 17" IN THE SADDLE BECAUSE SHE FINDS THE SADDLE IS A TINY BIT SMALL, SHE GOT THE 16"

  6. Use this calculator: http://www.evideofiles.com/calculators2/...

    Here's some tips:

    1. Make sure that that saddle will correctly fit your mare.

    2. Take English riding lessons. There are many differences between Western and English (for the rider). Trust me, you will NOT excel in the show ring if you ride Western in an English saddle. Definately take riding lessons so you can learn about English. Don't depend on us, because some people really don't know what their talking about and will give you wrong information. You want a trainer to teach you important aspects of English riding, as far as position, what to wear, events, cues, aids, etc.

    3. Unless your horse rode English with a previous owner, you are going to have to "re-break" her. Now I don't mean actually re-breaking her. But you should lunge her with an english saddle and bridle before you actually ride her in it. The english saddle is about 10 lbs less than a western saddle, and your mare will notice. Again, get a trainer to help you out.

  7. the way to go is two inches up from western to hunt.

    so 17 inches

  8. 17.  The general rule is go up 2" from your western saddle size.
