English Women defeat Belgium 4-0 in EuroHockey Nations Championship in Monchengladbach, Germany
The English Women scored an imposing victory over their Belgian counterparts beating them by 4-0 in the final Pool B match of Day 1 of the GANT EuroHockey Nations Championship (women), played at the Warsteiner Hockey Park in Monchengladbach, Germany on Saturday,
August 20.
The English ladies remained quite impressive throughout the entire match as they played a very well balanced and disciplined hockey in each of the two halves. They remained much clinical in their approach as they scored two goals in each half whereas their
opponents could not score even a single one in the allotted time of seventy minutes. In the first thirty five minutes the English athletes looked more dominant as compared to the second part of the game although they converted equal number of opportunities
into goals in both the halves.
The first half started with a great action by the English as they created a number of good chances by making some beautiful moves but they had to wait till the 13th minute when they scored their opening goal of the match. The scorer was Alex Danson
who scored a beautiful drag flick goal. Soon after the opener the English Women doubled their lead when Chloe Rogers scored a wonderful field goal in the 18th minute that lasted till the interval. The first half concluded at 2-0 to England.
In the second half the English Women also made two strikes but they had to wait for almost twelve minutes to open their score in the second phase of the game. They scored their third goal of the match in the 47th minute when Crista Cullen converted
a penalty corner in to goal. The English Women scored their last goal in the 55th minute when Kate Walsh, the skipper, contributed to the scoreboard. The match was concluded at 4-0 to England.
Danny Kerry, head coach, stated after match that he has more expectations from his side in their next match against Germany which will be played on Sunday, August 21.
“It’s a win, its three points and it’s a good start to the tournament. We know we didn’t play well and we are frustrated with that, but we have a big game against Germany and we need to look at how to pick ourselves up for that,” Danny Kerry, the head coach
of the English national women’s hockey side, shared his views after the match with the hope that his athletes will display even better performance in their next encounter against Germany.
The English team dominated most of the game against Belgium and managed to restrict their offence from scoring any goals throughout the match.
