English and Australian amateurs lead Australian Master of Amateurs after third round
The final batter of the Australian Master of the Amateurs will be between England’s Tom Lewis, Andrew Sullivan and Australian Ryan McCarthy.
McCarthy finished the third round leading the event at 6-under par at the Royal Melbourne in Australia. With the fight between the English and the Australians, the final round will showcase some good quality golf.
Posting a 3-under par in the third round, Lewis has rounds of 72-69-69 now. The Englishman really showed great performance in all three days and will be hoping to achieve victory in the final round.
As of right now, Tom is seen as the player to beat at this tournament. He was happy with the way he played in the last eleven rounds. Being the top amateur at last year’s Australian Open, Tom said that Australia has been nice to him till now. Feeling confident the player said that his driving is the strongest point at the moment and how it has really complemented him.
“I’m pleased with where I lay at the moment”, said Lewis. “I’m not going to put any pressure on me. I just need to see what happens. You have to hit it straight off the tee so you can get some spin into the greens, as the pins are tucked well. My driving has been the best part of my game and if I can hole out well, hopefully I will leave myself up in the mix”.
The other leader of the third round, Ryan McCarthy shot amazing rounds of 65-73-72 and really hopes to beat Lewis this time.
At the Australian Open, it was Tom that got the better of Ryan and took his medal at the Lakes in Sydney. McCarthy was one stroke off the lead after the opening round and secured a lead in the second round. Playing consistently throughout the tournament, Ryan is in a good spot right now.
McCarthy was sharing the lead with Ryan Fox and Stiggy Hodgson. Fox slipped from his lead to a triple bogey seven on the 18th hole. Posting a 75 in the third round, Fox is tied for eighth right now. Hodgson unfortunately became ill and was hospitalized and withdrew from the event.
The Australian Master of the Amateur is the strongest amateur field to compete this season in Australia. The winner of the tournament will receive many other privileges such as an exemption to the 2011 British Amateur Championship, Porter Cup and many others.
With so much as stake, the final showdown between the trio will surely be an interesting one to watch.
