Alright, my fiance is hispanic and speaks fluent spanish/english...I can barely speak spanish but we want our son to be able to speak both. So when he is born and we start talking to him, if my fiance talks to him in spanish, and i in english will he grow up understanding both languages?

  1. I'm in the same situation. My son is only about to be 8 months in a few days so I can't tell you from experience. BUT if your fiance talks to him in spanish and you in english, he will ACQUIRE both languages and won't have to LEARN it. Babies don't LEARN to speak english or what ever language is spoken where they are born, it's ACQUIRED. So it's definitely best to do it that way. I yell at my husband when he talks to him in english.

  2. Yes

My son is 16 months and understands both English and Spanish.

  3. Yes he will learn english and spanish.

  4. Yes he will. My husband is hispanic and speaks it a lot around our children, while I speak english. They've learned a lot so far especially our 4 yr. old daughter. We also bought them spanish/english books at Barnes & Noble so we can point to an object and tell them what it is in both languages.

  5. your child will absolutely be able to understand you both--more than that, its most likely that he will speak fluent english and spanish with proper accents (in other words, he wont speak english with a spanish accent or vice versa). children are linguistically a blank slate--we are born completely equipped to make the sounds for any language on the planet. as long as you both consistently speak to him in both languages, he'll be fine. you might notice that he'll temporarily be more adept in one language or the other, but whatever language hes lacking in, he'll catch up and it will even out. also, the sooner you start introducing both languages, the better--in fact, you should be speaking spanish and english to him now while hes in the womb! :)

  6. Well if he's as smart as you...  I doubt it.    Stop asking obvious questions....

  7. yes your son will understand both spanish and english..

im in the same situation. me and my fiance have a 3 month old baby girl. my husband is mexican and speaks both english and spanish. we live with my mom, so our daughter hears english over here...and we go to his moms house 3 days out of the week...and his mother && sisters speak spanish to and around my daughter when we are there. my mother in law speaks spanish only so thats ALL she speaks to my daughter. but thats a good thing because i want gianna [ my daughter ] to grow up speaking both. my fiance also speaks to gianna in spanish sometimes , so shes hearing both english & spanish ALOT. good luck !!

  8. Babies have the ability to learn anything..as we get older it is harder.

The baby will grow up learning both.He might have a speech delay (some do some don't) but it would pass.

It's good to teach both languages at a younger age as opposed to a older age (babies are constantly learning in the early years)

  9. I am the same way, my husband speaks english/spanish fluently I speak Arabic/English Fluently.

My son understands all three, when I speak to him I say it in arabic then repeat it in english. My husband says it in spanish and repeats in english. My son can understand perfectly when his grandparents (none of whom speak english) speak to him in either spanish or arabic and he speaks all three as well, he favors spanish but is coming along great.

It is a lot easier for them to pick up now then it is for them to pick it up later, they are learning so much it seems to them like this is just how it should be since they don't know any different. Its great for them to learn more then one language!

  10. I'm worried about the same thing because i'm fluent in both and my husband is not. I wonder what language to introduce first and how to include my husband in it.

  11. definitely, he'll learn both
