English county, Hampshire Royals, has requested Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to allow Pakistan’s former captain, Shahid Afridi, to take part in the Friends Life T20 competition in England.
Afridi was removed from the national captaincy last month as he violated the PCB's code of conduct and Misbah ul Haq was named the captain in all the formats of the game.
Afridi later announced his conditional retirement from international cricket and said that he will no longer play in the regime of the current cricket board.
As a result, PCB has suspended Afridi’s central contract and also dismissed all the No Objection Certificates (NOC’s) which the board had issued to Afridi in the past.
According to a Hampshire's statement, the county confirmed that the Pakistani all-rounder will not be able to play unless he gets the permission from PCB.
However, it is confirmed that Afridi will not take part in county’s opening T20 fixture against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Somerset-c843.
The county stated, "It is with regret that Hampshire Cricket announces that Shahid Afridi - the Royals overseas signing for the Friends Life t20 competition - will not be available to play in the match against the Somerset Sabres at The Rose Bowl".
Afridi is considered as one of the most effective limited-over's cricketers in the world as he is a fantastic right-arm leg spinner and can hit the cricket ball a mile on a given day.
Hence, the county is naturally quite keen to get the clearance from PCB as Afridi can play a huge role in Hampshire's success in the current season.
Hampshire also stated that they will abide by the laws of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and will wait for a final decision by PCB.
However, it will keep on pushing PCB to clear the former captain so that he can play the T20 competition.
“The club would like to make it clear that although we respect this decision we have been, and continue to, urge the PCB to rethink this matter, and we are keen to have Shahid playing for the Royals at some point in the season”, it further added.
