English: how do techniques add to the atmosphere created?

okay so im doing a Frankenstein essay for english and one of the paragraphs i have to comment on is;

How does Mary Shelley use language to make this scene realistic for the reader? I have to discuss the techniques used e.g. similes, adverbs, alliteration etc. and then comment upon the effect and how the atmosphere is created :| helllppppp?! :D X

  1. similes can make things seem more extreme that they really are. e.g. that bird dropped like a brick makes it seem heavier, instead of just saying the bird flew out of the sky.

    onomatopoeia (sounds) can help to be used to set the scene e.g. CRASH!!! bang bang bang. gives the sentence more depth and helps you to imagine what it would be like to be there.

    There are also very simple things like the way sentences are started in different ways etc..

    I know i missed some things out but i hope this should help a little!
