English media throws out the possibility of Rugby World Cup matches in Christchurch
English media has proposed that Rugby World Cup matches to be held in Christchurch should be cancelled. The media reports have claimed that AMI stadium in Christchurch has received huge damage because of the fatal earthquake in February. According to reports, World Cup organizers have “unofficially” admitted the fact that the venue is unfit to host international matches.
Christchurch has been hit by deadly quake on the 22nd of February that caused massive damage to the city. It was the second time in the last six months the city has been hit by an earthquake. The previous tremor took place in September 2010. The previous quake was stronger than the recent one but the fresh quake has caused severe damage because it took place in populated areas. The recent quake claimed more than 160 lives, as many as 170 missing and it destroyed hundreds of homes and buildings.
The Rugby World Cup is scheduled to be played in New Zealand and it will be kicking off in September this year. The AMI stadium of Christchurch, which is the second largest venue in New Zealand, is supposed to host seven matches, including two quarter finals. The structural damages and liquefaction on the playing surface has put the future of the venue in question.
Media advisor for RWC, Mr. Janssen, briefed the international press and said, "There are two distinct lines here, there's the official line from the RFU (Rugby Football Union) which is, in a nutshell, and we’ll take our cue from the IRB (International Rugby Board) and await all the official reports before a decision is made”.
Immediately after the quake AMI stadium was closed for two weeks so that authorities could assess the extent of damage. The official report is expected to come out by next week. However, media outlets have already started speculating about the future of the stadium. Yesterday local media papers showed images of the venue that displayed huge cracks in the sitting areas. The minister for the World Cup rejected those rumours by saying that it still has to be judged whether the damage was structural or cosmetic.
