I'm English and have an English drivers license and I'm going to be travelling around America in April 09 for three months. I want to buy a car. Is it possible to do this and get insurance without an American license?

  1. Why would you want to go through all that hassle for 3 months ? If you find the Rental rates pretty high, (which they are), you want to look at Minileases offered by Budget Rent a Car or Enterprise Rent a car. Those are cheaper than renting the car regular way.

A mini-Lease is nothing but long term rental. If the insurance offered by the Rental company is too steep, you can Rely on Visa's Collision Damage Waiver program. All you need to do is to rent a car with a Visa Card. Here are the details.

It'd help if you call beforehand and check to make sure Visa Card is covered. Usually it is.

  2. It will probably work out cheaper to hire a car.

    The insurance will be extortionate!

Buying a car as a foreigner is not as easy as you would think either. Oh no!

    The paperwork is incredible.

  3. Yes.  People buy cars here with a Mexican DL all the time.  You just have to pay extra for the insurance.
