  1. I think it's true we're very wary of Americans ... I think it started during WW2 when the GI's flaunted their goodies (stockings, chocolate etc) and wowed all the young girls ... it continued with the sort of loud tourists who took great pleasure in laughing at everything we had and telling us in America they had everything bigger and better than us

I must admit I find some American tourists here in London pretty hard to take ... they dress like they are on vacation at the beach instead of a major city and their voices can be heard half a mile away ... but the main thing that gets up my nose is the way they act like everywhere is a Disney theme park and they look upon us as bit players in a theme park ... there are some quiet, polite, suitably dressed American tourists but you tend not to notice them because they don't stand out and the other type give you all a bad name

  2. I asked the same question a while ago, and quite a few said no.

But personally, if I were from another culture, I wouldn't exactly be #1 in the American fan club.

(I wouldn't be the last, either.)

    Why?

    First-hand experience.

But anyway, just keep your head up, and show the ones that don't like us Americans that they might be missing out!

  3. We hate everyone. Be pleased you're important enough to be hated!

The thing English people don't like about Americans is the stereotype- and sadly, I've come across a lot of them so it hasn't helped.

The stereotypical American tourist is fat, always wears shorts, socks, sandals, and brightly coloured t-shirts. They talk in incredibly loud voices, exclaiming that the entire country is 'quaint' with a load of 'oh my god's thrown in for good measure. They're far louder than we are.

Let me tell you a story about my encounter with an American tourist.

My friends and I were queuing to go up the Eiffel tower, talking amongst ourselves, when a Stereotypical American Tourist in front of us turned around to us.

SAT: "Oh my God, is that a British accent?"

Me: "Erm... well, it's an English accent"

    SAT: "I miss London"

    Me: "I'm from Manchester"

    SAT: "I miss London"

    Me: "I've never been"

    SAT: "I miss London"

  4. Having visited a large part of the US, on the whole, i like americans - at home!

Some of the foregoing stories/legends are true.   Like most of us abroad we can be annoying and obnoxious, but when we are at home we are hospitable and kind to strangers.

Except the French and Germans of course.

  5. What Katie F. said is funny and (often) very true! I don't hate Americans and I've met some really nice ones, I think there's just an image of the stereotypical American tourist who spends all the time talking loudly, being ignorant and eating burgers. I'm sure it's just the minority who ruin it for everyone else!
