  1. For taking lessons and schooling i prefer paddock boots and a pair of good half chaps. I personally like the Ariat zip-up half chaps. You can even participate in smaller schooling shows in the half chaps. I wouldn't buy a pair of tall field boots until you have been jumping for a while and are ready to go to bigger shows because of the cost. Also, you should get a couple pairs of schooling breeches. The color doesn't really matter for lessons or schooling, but for shows tan or buff is usually the color to go for. You want good quality in your breeches so they will last longer as you ride.

  2. Yeah half chaps and paddock boots are good (go brown). I prefer tall boots better (but mine we cheap, $50, so...). You can also just wear long tights or jeans instead of breeches/jodphurs.

    Paddock Boots- $50

    Half Chaps- $70

Breeches- $50 (which is real cheap)- $120 (around $70 is normally right)

I find dublin universal tall boots ($50) are really good.

You can also just wear gumboots (you can get them for around $30) and tights ($10-$20).

  3. I would get the short lace ups. It's a better investment b/c you can use them for any disipline. The purpose for tall boots is for protecting your legs b/c stirrup leathers on english saddles tend to rub. I would buy the lace ups and a pair of half chaps.

Your apearance should be tidy but comfortable when taking lessons. Jeans, a polo shirt, lace up boots, and half chaps should be perfect.

    Have fun learning something new!

  4. YOUR INTERESTED IN JUMPING TOO!(so am I and I ride western also)

You can do whatever I have seen lately people wearing paddock boots with half chaps if I start I would go with the paddock boots and half chaps idea my parents don't really have alot of money now since everything is breaking at this time!

  5. yup... jodhpurs and boots... i wear paddock boots because i don't compete, but like you i like the look of a nice tall/field boot so i wear my paddock boots and half chaps (it looks like this: http://www.farmhousetack.com/GPLeatherHa... ) and i like them A LOT because they stay tight around my calf

  6. ive found that the short lace up boots are the best.  i dont think it matters which one you get though.

  7. Because tall boots cost so much most go with just half chaps over their short boots.  I worked in a very nice h/j barn and majority of the kids rode in their jeans.  You can get breechers if you would like so you do not wreck your jeans.  I would go with a nice pair that does not cost to much because you will be in the barn and around the horses.  Tall boot cost a lot and can get really ruined around horses so unless you and your parent have money they want to spend I would go with the half chaps.  Here is a link to some:

  8. I think that you should get the shorter "paddock" boots. They are sturdy, versatile and affordable. Most english riders wear paddock boots to regular lessons.

  9. Yep the shorter ones let your leg move a bit more freely, although the tall boots are more posh looking.

Typical english riding is cream jodphurs and boots. Have fun!

  10. I agree with ReneeL - paddock boots and half chaps so your legs don't get pinched!

You can get nice half chaps that look like tall boots with your half chaps. There's no use in spending lots of money on tall boots unless you're showing, in my opinion.

  11. I prefer riding in paddock boots (the shorter boot) than tall boots, because I feel I have a better "feel" of the horse.  It's one less layer of material between him and I.  If you are just starting out, I'd recommend getting paddock boots first.  They're cheaper and more comfortable.  Later on, if you want to show and must have tall boots to do so, you can invest in a pair.  Tall boots are hard to break in, as they are very stiff, and they are very expensive so if you're still growing, you might not want to buy a pair just yet.

The riding pants are called breeches, and you can get a pair of those or else schooling tights.  Both tights and breeches have knee patches and look the same, but schooling tights are made of more lightweight material.  They are cheaper to buy and, to me, more comfortable to wear.

    ....And don't forget your helmet!
