Question:

English-speaking bartender in Montreal?

Is anyone working in the service industry in Montreal? I am considering to move there, and I am a bartender. My question is regarding language; my French is rudimentary at best, are there places that will hire someone who can't converse well in French? I have heard different things- some say it's no problem, there are lots of English-only (or mostly...) bars, but a good friend who has lived there for twenty years says I will definitely need to speak French to work in the service industry.

Thanks!

  1. yup unfortunately. if you can speak french-no problem but if you  CAN;T  speak english you;re almost hired immediately, messed up eh?

  2. why would you want to go to montreal if you have no french and only want to work as a server?  come on!  there are better places to wait tables.  what's wrong with toronto?

  3. Your friend is correct.  You're going to need French, but it's also the law there - anyone in customer service has to be able to offer services in both languages.  It's not strictly enforced, though, so you may be fine with pidgin French.
