Question:

English spellings does it annoy you too?

Every time I use the spell checker on this site it tells me I've spelled things wrong when I use an English spellings. Now I'm not going to start saying US spellings are wrong because there are good historical reasons why they exist, but for Pete's sake, I know how to spell "behaviour", "colour" and "organise".

  1. I agree with you entirely; the person who has said that, if your spelling is good, you don't need the spell-check, has completely missed the point of your question. It is even more annoying when you are typing a letter in Word or Office and the spell-check tries to impose American spellings on you unsolicited.

  2. It's even worse if, for example, you answer a question in Yahoo Italy or France and your account is registered in Yahoo Canada.

It is just one more glitch in the long list of glitches within Yahoo.  I really don't now why they even bothered have a spell-checker as a feature but hopefully they will get it fixed soon.

Meanwhile, you will just have to ignore it.

  3. I agree - the spellchecker can be a pain. Sometimes I think we'd be better off without the damned thing.

  4. the spell check is annoying to me and i am US born and raised. : )

add a little punctuation and it really gets going

  5. Yes it is a tad annoying, but I can handle it, and the punctuation, that is annoying as well.  But they are not near as bad as the atrocious purposely misspelled words and letters instead of words and  short forms that I have never seen before.  What is becoming of the English language today, is this what it will look like 10 years from now because the kids are to d**n lazy or stupid to do it right?

  6. I think the way round this is to check your language selector - if it's set to ENG (US) then it may be a good idea to change it to ENG(UK) and transfer the English spellings to  the dictionary. That should solve your problem!

By the way, I do find this really annoying, too.

  7. My spelling is good but I find the spell checker useful because I do typos and sometimes do not notice them. Come on, there are greater inconveniences in the world!

(I had just typed wolrd and the checker signaled it)

  8. If your spelling is that good then you don't need the spelling checker.

  9. It bugs me too. I spell 'dialog' as 'dialogue', because dang it that's the way it should be spelled. That is correct. The bastardized American version doesn't fly with me, and i'm American!

  10. The spell checker doesn't like contractions, either. No worries, we in the US hate the checker as much as you do.

  11. it annoys me to!

  12. kinda

  13. Hi,

Well, the spell checker isn't  perfect, but, of course, we all know  that the world isn't perfect, at least from our individual perspective.   The Brits spell some words one way and those of us in the US spell them another.  Considering the diversity of English speakers, it's amazing there aren't more differences than there actually are.  With several billion people in this world, it's unlikely that anyone will get exactly what they want.
