England’s Ben Young gets conditional spot in Rugby World Cup 2011 squad - Rugby News
Ben Young’s inclusion in the Rugby World Cup 2011 squad has been made conditional and based on his fitness level. The English star has been suffering from a knee injury and he will be required to heal from the wound well before the start of clashes for the
Webb Ellis Trophy. Rugby World Cup 2011 is kicking off later this year in New Zealand on September 9 and the scrum-half is a key player for the England side despite being very young.
The 21-year-old scrum half made his international debut in 2010 against Australia, and helped his side to a nail biting victory over the Wallabies by 21-20. He has been around England’s national side for a while as he has played in the U-16 and U-18 teams
for his country. Young has also played in the national side of his team as a U-20 player in the championships of 2008-09.
He has played 15 games in two championships and earned 20 points for his side. He was part of the English side which played two consecutive finals of the Junior World Championship in 2008 and 2009 but they were defeated both times by New Zealand.
Later on, he remained part of England’s Sevens National team during 2008.
The physicians of the England squad have predicted Young’s recovery at least in six weeks. If the athlete fails to recover in time, he could be replaced by Danny Care or Richard Wigglesworth at scrum-half’s position. A spokesman of England’s team told the
media that Ben Young has undergone knee surgery which will take six weeks to recover from. He further said that, "A full recovery is expected as quickly and as safely as possible under the guidance of the operating surgeon. Ben will continue his rehabilitation
with the England medics in close consultation with their Leicester Tigers counterparts.”
The Rugby Football Union is hopeful about Young’s timely comeback into the side. RFU, in a press release statement, said that Young’s inclusion in the RWC 2011 will be a great boost for the side.
