Englishman Chris Wood grabs the lead in the second round of Iberdrola Open
Chris Wood stormed the second round of the Iberdrola Open with his fiery shots, snatching the lead through the halfway mark of the tournament with three shots. The Englishman is looking for his maiden win on the European Tour and carded the second round
score of five-under, 65 for an aggregate of eight-under.
Players battered the windy conditions on the tough links style lay-out of the p**a Golf Club, Mallorca. Wood’s compatriot Matthew Nixon and Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke, the former vice captain of Ryders Cup, both finished for an aggregate of five-under.
Wood’s consistent putting and excellent control throughout the second round, didn’t give the contenders much room for a forward charge. He cruised all the way up to the 16th and stumbled with a bogey when his approach went wayward into the trees.
He pulled in six birdies to finish the round.
“You just have to keep it in play and think your way round a bit more,” said Wood, “I am taking some holes on and being a bit more considered on others and it is working. I played lovely all day really but its funny how it can change so quickly.”
The 23-year-old Englishman, Woods has a phenomenal run in his short career and has finished in top-ten for a staggering 14 times on the European Tour. He came closest to wining an event on the tour when he lost the Playoff challenge at the Africa open at
the beginning of the season. Woods has also finished top-five twice at the Open Championship.
“It will happen - I just need to keep putting myself in these positions,” said Wood when asked about his long wait for a title. “The more that I can do that than the more chances I will have to win.”
Overnight leader, Frenchman Grégory Bourdy, who shattered the course record yesterday, slid out of contention after his lackluster performance in the second round scoring a seven-over, 77.
Another Frenchman Thomas Levet made his charge when he equaled wood’s score for the day of 65, and settled tied for fourth with four-under.
The €1,000,000 event will proceed to the third round with the projected cut likely to be placed at five-over.
