Englishman Ross Fisher may opt out of The Masters – PGA update
British golfer, Ross Fisher, will possibly be unable to participate in this year’s first Major, The Masters at Augusta, due to the impending birth of his second child on 12 April. Fisher is still confused about whether to go ahead with the tournament as
an early delivery might cause him to quit in the middle of the tournament and get back home.
"To be perfectly honest I don't know what I'll do if the baby comes early," Fisher told, “I’ll just have to wait and see when the baby comes. I'll have to cross that bridge if and when we come to it."
Fisher faced a similar situation in the British Open in 2009 when his first child was due. He went all the way to the final round but had already decided to drop everything and reach his wife Joanne if she went into labour. Fisher was so concerned that he
even asked his manager to alert him in case anything happened. However, the baby did not come early and Fisher finished four strokes behind the champion Stewart Cink and rushed home to greet his daughter Eve’s arrival.
This time around, things can be a little complicated as Fisher would be playing on the other side of the Atlantic. "It is a fairly similar situation although obviously a little harder with me being in the States as opposed to being in Scotland," said the
6-foot-3 Englishman. "That will make things a little trickier. It would be very difficult to get back in time."
The 30-year-old golfer was in high spirits coming out triumphant in the Irish Open in August which saw him climb the World Golf Ranking to the 20th spot, but his average performance after that has seen him drop down to 43rd. The Englishman
has been eyeing the top slot for a long time now and vowed to reach it one day. Fisher also agreed that if a golfer is not performing well his rankings tend to suffer, something which happened to him.
The four time European Tour winner hails from the Wentworth Golf Club in Surrey, England. He joined the European Tour in 2006 and his first high profile win came in 2007 when he won the KLM Open. Fisher also tied in a three-way playoff with Lee Westwood
and Phil Mickleson in the HSBC Championship in Shanghai in 2008, subsequently losing to Mickelson. He won the first European Open at Heritage at the London Golf Club, and comfortably ended the season being sixth on the Tour’s Order of Merit. Fisher continued
his steady ascent to the top with a good season in 2009 when he won the Volvo world Match Play Championship, reaching the semi final of the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship in Arizona and finished second in the BMW PGA Championship. Fisher was selected
for the Ryders Cup 2010 European team, which won the trophy defeating the US team at the Celtic Manor.
