Englishman Tom Lewis summits the 2011 St. Andrews Links Trophy in Scotland
English Amateur player Tom Lewis pulled in a near-perfect round on the final day to win the 2011 St. Andrews Links Trophy in Scotland on Monday, June 6. Lewis posted a final round of five-under, 67 and finished for an aggregate of nine-under, four shots
clear of the nearest contenders Sebastian Maclean of Bolivia, Welshman Rhys Enoch and Dutchman Daan Huizing.
Lewis attributed his success to his father who had earlier predicted a win for the former British Boy’s Champion at the Old Course.
“He said a couple of years ago that I would have a good chance of winning here,” said Lewis after his final round. “It was a good shout as he has been proved right. It [the Old Course] quite suits me.”
Lewis is currently ranked 3rd in the World Amateur Rankings and has done splendid job to move up the rankings in the season. Lewis won the Australian Open title last December and finished runners up in NSW Open championship to Peter O’Malley.
Lewis posted another top-ten finish at the Australian Master of the Amateurs at Royal Melbourne in January. He has considerably matured with his consecutive wins both in Australasia as well as in Europe and is hoping to be a part of the Walker Cup team from
the Great Britain and Ireland.
“Playing the Walker Cup is a huge goal for me,” says Lewis. “At the same time I want to get myself into position to win more championships and feel what it is like to put yourself under pressure. I’m usually pretty good in those situations and it is great
to get a win.”
Leading Australian amateur player Ben Campbell finished tied for the sixth spot with his rounds of 69, 71, 73 and 72.
“I closed out this event a little poorly,” said a disappointed Campbell, who has been stomach-sick since his arrival in Scotland. Matt Stieger and Bret Drewitt finished further down the leaderboard with their sloppy final round scores of three-over and six-over
respectively. Stieger is ranked 13th in the world rankings while Campbell is 15th and Drewitt is further down at the 45th.
