Englishmen Luke Donald and Lee Westwood miss another hit on the major at PGA Championship
The duo at the top of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), have again let down their fan club with a disappointing finish at the last major of the year, the PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club where both carded rounds of two-under, 68 on the final
day to settle for a joint eighth.
Luke Donald, the current world number one and Lee Westwood, world number two, have been facing a serious dearth of major titles in their otherwise stellar careers and both the Englishmen have not been able to win a single major in their more than decade’s
long careers.
“A missed opportunity again,” Donald said. “The positive I see is I didn’t have my best this week and I still came reasonably close. I know I’ve got the game to compete and win Majors, but got to take that it as a positive. Again, bittersweet.”
Donald who rose to the top of the OWGR at the BMW International when he took over Westwood on a Playoff, has played phenomenal golf throughout the season starting from his first victory at the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship in February. He defeated
the then world number Martin Kaymer in the final round at Tucson Arizona.
With a considerable shorter drive off the tee, Donald has worked hard over the season to improve his putting to make up for the loss in yardage. The Englishman pulled in four birdies and dropped two shots on the closing holes to throw away his chances of
a major title victory. He finished five shots behind the Rookie Keegan Bradley who lifted his first major title on his first appearance.
Westwood, on the other hand, has been desperately trying to break his major taboo for quite a while now. The 38-year-old Englishman gets visibly upset over questions regarding his inability to reign in a major title in his long career.
“I have enjoyed playing great for a long time now, but unfortunately when I turn up to Majors, when I don’t win one, then it’s disappointing for everybody it seems,” Westwood said. “Obviously, for me, but that’s the sort of level of golf I’m playing at.”
Westwood also has posted one his best performances in the year, winning events all over the world. He took over the number one spot from Tiger Woods some two years back and remained unchallenged at the top for 17 months before he was knocked off by Martin
Kaymer earlier in the year.
Westwood also leads the tour in terms of Greens in Regulation. He carded three birdies on the final day and dropped a shot at the closing hole to settle for a joint eighth alongside Donald.
