Question:

Enhancing Sound From Camcorder Microphone Idea?

Hi!

I'm preparing to work on a new video project for a kids ministry at my chuch and I am fairly new to filming. I have done a video which you can check out:

http://www.godtube.com/view_video.php?viewkey=0223c6ef38f2dd996aa2

(The website lowered the quality though)

But in that video I was able to get by without using the internal mic on my video camera

This time I need to use a microphone when I record and I know that audio is %60 of a any video production, or so I've heard.

Here's my idea for a boom mic and I want to know if you think it is feasible, or practical

I will buy an omnidirectional dynamic microphone ($25) and construct the boom myself for under ($10) and make a homemade windshield to put on the mic, like the one on this website:

What do you think? I'm on a low budget, so please don't throw in anything super expensive (under $85)

What I want to know most is if the omnidirectional mic will b okay Thanks

  1. It should work fine - the closer the mic is to them, the better it will be. Because it is an omni, when it is close to the sound source it will pick up what is loudest.

  2. An omnidirectional microphone will most-likely pick up noise from you and the camera.  I would purchase a small-diaphram (sometimes called a pencil) condenser mic with the standard cardioid pattern.  It will be incredibly sensitive and have a good frequency range, but will have a null axis that points towards you and the camera.

    Hope it helps.

  3. a mic system like this is only as good as its operator. A blimpy system is really designed for use with a shotgun/highly directional mic, the operator keeps it pointed at the speaker. An omni requires moving too close to the speaker, the boom will constantly be droping into the shot. It takes a strong operator to hold a boom for any length of time, remember that when recruiting help. my personal choice would be to just use the omni and sneak it in close, hidden if need be and forget the blimp.
