Question:

Enlisting in National Guard grant independence?

Hi, I'm attending a state university in the fall. I'm looking into the National Guard, but I have a few questions.

First of all, if I were to enlist in the Nat Guard would I be considered an independent student? If so, when filing my FAFSA for next year I would say that I am independent, so would I gain more financial aid? As of now, I receive absolutely nothing from the federal or state government.

Also, do you actually receive all the money that they claim you do? $4500 per fiscal year scholarship, Montgom. GI Bill to assist with room, board, books, and fees, and an Enlistment Bonus of up to $20,000? How does this all work?

I do not want to be deployed--they claim that you don't have to move or be deployed, is this always true?

Would it be possible for me to attend school and also receive these benefits? Maybe part-time? How does that work?

Would I actually looking forward to a free education?

If someone could please explain this whole process that'd be great. Thank you!

  1. First, just by being in the army does not make you an independent. You have to be providing more than half of another dependents income, or you have to be 24. 2nd, with the army, there are usually clauses that say you have to be enlisted after so much time for them to pay for your schooling. You really need to go back through and read all of your paperwork before you agree to anything if you are this unsure about what you will be doing. If you are in the army or national guard or any other military facility, they can say that you will not be deployed but they cannot guarantee it to you. It's the little words that you say like up to is where they get. it's not that you will get it, but there is a possiblity that you will. Hope this helps

  2. First off, I didn't finish reading your question...but I'm just ganna say "Don't do it!" Many student's have problems with this. Your not ganna get the money at once...or even all of it. This is something student advocates are fighting for right now. Basically, its a lie. But find out for your self....hope that helped :P
