I realize Beach volleyball is the rage, but my god they are playing it way too much. I know I'm not the only one that thinks so either. What is the deal? I understand that the gals have won 100 plus matches straight and that is great, but c'mon it is actually being forced down our throat when we are only able to watch some of the excellent weightlifting online. Really pushing it NBC/Universal.

  1. I know! Too much d**n beach volleyball. The coverage during the Athens 2004 olympics had much more variety.

  2. I'm lucky if I'm able to see a volleyball game during this olympics.. : /

Maybe you just happen to tune in when volleyball is on at that moment?

  3. I enjoy watching beach volleyball, it's not boring at all.

  4. I like watching indoor volleyball much more than beach volleyball. It just seems like there's more strategy involved.

Agreed. NBC's coverage seems to focus on a few exclusive athletes. Really annoying, actually.

  5. NBC Universal has a year-round contract with the governing body for beach volleyball, so showing as much volleyball as they do serves two purposes:

    (1) It fulfills part of their contract, since May-Treanor and Walsh compete on that circuit, and

    (2) It drums up interest for the sport the rest of the year, when there's not Olympic-level interest in it.

Seem shady to me, but there's not a whole lot we can do! They don't have contracts like that with other sports (like baseball, softball, or wrestling, for instance), so they don't feel the need to give those equal time.

  6. Every Olympics is the same.  If you watched only the mainstream primetime coverage, you'd think all the Olympics is swimming, volleyball, skating, gymnastics, etc.  The execs at the major networks that get the contracts for the Olympics realize that men don't watch nearly as much network TV as they used to, so they gear their coverage for their target audience...women and guys who are too lazy to change the channel.  Thanks to the internet though, you can see plenty of footage of karate, weightlifting, fencing, and the decathlon.

  7. They feature events that America has a chance at winning, and America is not good at weightlifting. Also, they feature events that they THINK Americans want to watch, so despite a blowout in the women's fencing with an all-American medal stand, they didn't show fencing on prime time!

At least they do have somewhere to watch events that are not on TV. It's better than having no possible way to see weightlifting or fencing or archery, etc.

  8. Yeah....its only you and your gayness wanting to watch weightlifting.
