Enough with Iams; Should I go with Canidae or wait for Solid Gold Large Breed pups.?

I've had it with Iams. The girls look malnourished. Petco doesn't have the big bag of Solid Gold. Should I just go ahead with Canidae All life Stages? They are large breed pups. Wellness and Blue Buffalo are too expensive. No other brands are available in 50 miles radius.

  1. Personally I wouldn't.  Canidae is now owned by Diamond foods, they had the most pet deaths in the last pet food recall, they've also changed their formula without notifying the general public, the bag is the same but the quality isn't.  Remember the pet food industry isn't regulated and so they can put what they like into each bag and they don't have to list it, they can claim one thing while doing another.

If you want a decent food, Breeders Choice puts out several brands that are good food, personally I use Pinnacle Holistic food for my Weimaraner but you can get Avoderm at PetsMart now and that's what we feed our lab.

You can go with Canidae but my dogs didn't do so well on that food I had to change it.

  2. Canidae is a good food. Another good food we just recently discovered is Zach's dog food. It's new so it's not very heard of, but if you look at the ingredients, it's excellent kibble. The price is great considering the quality of the food. Only negative thing is the fact they're new, so unless you live in their area, you have to pay to have it shipped to you. But it's definitely worth checking out! We've noticed a huge improvements in our dogs since we started feeding it. Here's the link:

  3. Careful with Canidae. They recently changed their formulation and it has caused problems for some dogs.

  4. Sure! Just go on ahead with Canidae ALS. It is WAY better then Iams junk.

  5. Just about anything is more nutritious than IAMS. Canidae has changed its formula but most of the problems popping up is owners who are used to feeding Canidae are not transitioning slowly to the new formula. Solid Gold varieties are very good. I wouldn't limit myself to one variety though since they are all high qualoty and well balanced for all life stages which the exception of Wolf King I believe-too much protien for growing pups. Eagle Pack Holistic is another great kibble that offers several all stages varieties. Price wise Canidae would be the less expensive and stay high quality.

Stay away from foods that contain known allergens such as corn, wheat and soy. These are not only known allergens in sensitive dogs but also have little to no nutritional value.

  6. I have 2 American Eskimo's who are both rescued.  When each one came to us they were severely malnourished & have both been on the Solid Gold & are healthy, with beautiful coats & beautiful clear eyes & in great shape.  If you ask Petco they should be able to order you in the large bags of Solid Gold.  I am on a website for American Eskimo's & the subject came up last weekend about Canidae foods & it seems that they have recently changed their formula's without telling their customers.  I think they are carrying more filler now in their food.  I emailed the guy who was concerned & told him & showed him the results of what Solid Gold did for my dogs & he went out & found a store near him that sells Solid Gold & switched his puppy over.  I also feed them the SeaMeal Supplement from Solid Gold everyday & the results are amazing.  So I say Solid Gold.  I was referred to it by some breeders who have never fed their dogs anything else in years & have a very beautiful & healthy line of pups.  Good Luck in deciding

  7. Dear Jasmine,Great to hear you are the kind of pet owner that takes the time to get involved in pets' feed and health. Am I correct that the photo is of a Great Dane? If so, ribs should be showing slightly and an elevated look to the hips. This assures me that your beloved pets are not overfed. If you believe pets are on the "scrawny" side a stoole sample should be brought to Vet. for exam. Takes all of 30 sec. to test for internal parasites. You mention Iams. I think for the $$ this is a good food for canines. I would however augment with a chewable multi. to insure full nutri. Irecomd. to "customers" this line because of nutri.,price and content.Have for years and I practice what I preach for my own pets (Boxers).Don't let the "experts" trick you into believing their line is superior because it does not contain "killer" corn. Take the Noble Boxer....bred in Germany 100 plus years ago. The food staple was cooked mixed grains and CORN with table scraps and a little rendered kill for flavor. I would say the breed did just fine. Todays top tier foods have everything from fish, exotic herbs and supplements that have been proven useless yet they rave about them. Of course this ingredients are inexpensive but to justify the price they play on your feelings for your pet. I did a casual 2 year compar./study on nutri.,product elim. and digest.(I have access to a lab) to see if the "experts" were correct in saying any corn based product was harming my or my "customers" pets.I compared Iams smart puppy and 2 of their other bag. product against Blue Buff.,Nutro. Ultra anWellness brand food. These are fine foods that I would feed my pets but the nutri. factor does not justify the expense.Iams with a pet tab came in @1/2 the cost. Good luck, hope this was inform. and give your pets a hug and pat for me.
