If anyone knows of any year-long enriching programs that would look good on a college application that accept students taking a year off from high school I'd appreciate it.

  1. The first thing you need to look at is a program that has enough school credits to make it LEGAL for you to do this!

Unless you are home schooled, or participate in an exchange student program or something like it, you are required by law to be in school.

I might suggest that you do an exchange year to a different country as a junior. You would not actually be taking the year off -- you would be doing it instead of your junior year of school. That means you'd still graduate on time. American high schools will give credit for going on an exchange with a certified program (www.csiet for a list). You can check with your school counselor for recommendations too -- generally AFS, YFU, Aspect and Rotary are reliable everywhere.

Colleges and universities love exchange students and many give preferred admissions and/or scholarships for that. Also, you will have the live long benefit of language immersion.
