Enrico Burzi sweeps away Bastian Trinker to sit in the main draw – Todi Challenger 2011
2011 Internazionali di Tennis dell'Umbria fired off with the 3rd match of the day, Sunday, 11th September, as the local lad Enrico Burzi washed his hands off of the Austrian, Bastian Trinker in the final qualifier
of the Todi Challenger. With an easy walk over by retirement, it took Burzi one hour and 28 minutes to conquer the clay court winning 6-4, 4-1 Ret’d, and to walk into the main draws.
Playing at Todi, Italy, the two unseeded players played their first head-to-head match with a rather controversial ending. Trinker, ranked world No.779, gave off the match due to a strain in his ankle when he was down 4 games in
the second set.
Aged 21, started off with his career as a clay court player in 2010. With 12-12 win loss record this season, the Austrian went on entering the Todi Challenger with nothing but luck as his arsenal of weapons. The right hander, prior
this match, has had a bad luck lately as he lost 6 out of his last 10 matches.
On the contrary, the 30-year-old local lad seemed comfortable in his final qualifier match as he whipped the 21-year-old in straight sets. Having similar 10 matches run, Burzi lost 6 of his prior 10 matches including his loss in
the Genova Challenger. However, the Italian pulled out his 403 matches experience to undo the young Austrian and take the win.
Kicking off with the match, the Italian started the serve and rolling down the scoreboard, 1-0. Following the 30-year-old home player, Trinker ousted his counterpart in game 2 to level the terms. Volleying down the line, both players
managed to win on their respective serves before Burzi knocked out the 21-year-old with a breakpoint in game 9 and rallied game 10 to win the set 6-4 and lead the match 1-0.
Although the young Austria did try to break the Italian world No.454, however, Burzi saved 5 out of 5 breakpoint chances. Securing 29 service points and 14 returners, the 30-year-old totalled 43 points to win the set and move on
to the decider.
Serving set 2 first the 21-year-old got knocked down early by the Italian. Breaking the young rival in game 1, Burzi increased his lead winning 2 games straight including a breakpoint win in game 3 as well. With scores at 3-0,
Trinker managed to cut the lead to 3-1 winning game 4. However, Burzi replied with winning another game, game 5, the Austrian decided to retire due to a strain in his leg.
In addition to 43 points in the first set, Burzi managed another 22 totalling 65 to his win against 51 of Trinker.
Winning the final qualifier 6-4, 4-1, Burzi sits in the main draws of the Todi Challenger as he awaits his 1st round match against the mighty Spaniard, Gerard Granollers, for a seat in the second round.
