  4. I presume you mean in the American War of Independence?

    There were around 30,000 of them.  They were paid as soldiers, given clothes and weapons, and were also given their freedom.  Many went on to found Sierra Leon, in fact.  

    Sadly, however, many who were captured by the British and taken from Rebel masters, ended up being shipped to the British sugar islands possessions, which was a virtual death sentence.

    You might also note that around 5,000 African Americans fought for the Continental (Rebel) forces, many of them in the Rhode Island regiments.  They were also given their freedom at the end of the war, although there is some evidence to suggest that some were returned to slavery, if they had run away from a master who supported the Revolution.
