Question:

Entertainment Center Power Usage Question?

I just put together a living room entertainment center with a large HDTV, DVD Recorder, Surround Sound, Nintnedo Wii and Stereo. I have all of these plugged into a power strip. When I am at work or sleeping at night, would it be smart to unplug the power strip to conserve all the energy these things cumulatively use in stand-by mode, or would unplugging and plugging back on these electronics risk doing some gradual damage to them?

  1. it is much safer to leave them plugged.. some of the best manufacturers in the world don't even have on/off switches.. this is to keep the caps charged and stabilize circuitry! i repair electronics and as long as your not overloading your protector leave them alone!

  2. If your power strip has an on/off switch you could use that instead of plugging and unplugging to save wear and tear on the plugs.  However, some items like the HDTV and DVD recorder may have to be set up each time you connect power back up to it since they use a small amount of power to remember their settings.

  3. As long as your power strip also has surge protection , you shouldn't have to worry about plugging and unplugging it all the time . And yes you could potentially damage your components. Not to mention, you could lose personal settings in your reciever by doing so. Standby mode hardly draws anything .
