Enticing remuneration for Indonesian shuttlers who bring medals from 2012 London Olympics
Indonesia, one of the leading countries in the world of badminton, is working hard to get to the top spot in the game. For keeping their players focused on the 2012 London Olympics, the governing body of badminton in Indonesia, PBSI (Persatuan Bulutangkis
Seluruh Indonesia), has announced the tempting prize money of US$112,000 for those badminton players who will emerge as the winners in the Olympic Games, next year.
Secretary General of PBSI, Jacob Rusdianto, made the announcement after the official meeting of the sport’s governing body, on April 5.
For delivering a better performance in the badminton competition in 2012 London Olympics, PBSI is focusing on the training of 25 best players in the country. World class facilities will be provided to the selected players in all categories of the game including
the Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. The best available coaches are working hard to enhance the physical skills and mental tactics of the players, which will enable them to compete against the best shuttlers
of the world.
Since the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Indonesian shuttlers have always brought gold medals in the Olympic Games. In 1992, Alan Budikusuma and Susi Susanti won two gold medals in the Men’s and Women’s Singles categories. In the 2006 Atlanta Olympics, Ricky Subagja
and Rexy Mainaky from Indonesia won the gold medal in the Men’s Doubles category.
In the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Tony Gunawan and Candra Wijaya grabbed the gold medal in the Men’s Doubles. Taufik Hidayat then won the gold medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics, in the Men’s Singles category. In the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Markis Kido and Hendra
Setiawan won the gold medal in the Men’s Doubles category.
PBSI is looking forward to continue their winning tradition in the Olympic Games. To make players more focused for the coveted event, no stone will be left unturned, as the country needs some superb players to bring gold medals from the event.
Local hero, Taufik Hidayat, who won the Olympic gold in 2004, will represent Indonesia in the 2012 Olympic Games. Currently, Taufik is ranked at the Number Three spot in the Men’s Singles world rankings. Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan will be defending
their title in the 2012 London Olympics, as they won the gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Indonesia has a rich culture of badminton, where people follow this game religiously. However, Indonesian shuttlers are struggling hard in the Men’s Singles category. Only one Indonesian is ranked in the top ten players in the world rankings. Indonesia needs
more players in the top rankings as China’s Lin Dan and Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei, will be the favourites for the title in the 2012 Olympics.
