I know that right now you can drive into Canada without a passport if you have a drivers license and birth certificate. Does anyone know when they are going to start requiring a passport?

  1. That is tentatively scheduled for next June.  You really have to pay attention for updates though, there were a lot of delays so far.

  2. Jim B is not entirely correct. The law applies to both US citizens *AND* permanent residents (i.e., green card holders). Green card holders do NOT need a passport to visit Canada if they are travelling by land or sea (although it is recommended they bring them along for identification purposes and to make re-entry into the US easier).

  3. You can have all the information in below page:

    http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw...

    Please refer it.

  4. Based on regulations set down by the US Department of Homeland Security effective June 1, 2009 you will require a Passport or approved alternative (i.e. a passport card) to travel into the US by any method.  There is no date set to require a passport for travel into Canada however, since you would have to return, I would assume the same date as for the US.  At this point it is likely Canada Customs will require a Passport for people travelling into Canada simply because you will require one to return to the US.

  5. As of right now it is June 1, 2009.  however seeing as this date has already been pushed back about 7 times, you can probably count on it being pushed back again.  But prepare yourself for that date in case it doe change on time.

  6. This information ONLY applies to thosw who are "American Citizens " so lets be clear.

IF you are an American citizen , you can enter Canada  with just a proof of citizenship, such  as a original birth certificate, not a photopcopy, and one further ID such as  a  state issued driver's licenece.

If  you are NOT an Americam citiizen. you need a valid , current passport from your home country, to enter Canada, as a VISITOR.

      No exceptions.

    Jim B. Toronto.
