Hey there,

I have an interview later this week with an engineering firms, structural engineering dept for an entry level structural engineering position. I have just graduated with a bachelors in sustainable development engineering/civil engineering. I have been working with an engineering firm in regards to there civil/leed consultant. What should I read up on regarding structural engineering? What terms should I be familiar with? It is a phone interview, should I mention certain concepts in structural engineering? Can someone please explain timber usage in structural engineering?

  1. Be able to talk competently about what you did in school.  What kinds of projects did you design/build?  Talk in detail about your best projects.

Given a choice between steel, pre-stressed concrete, wood; in what kinds of structures would you use each? Why?

Wood is often cheaper for framing low rise structures than steel or concrete.  Wood has a higher fire rating than steel of the same size.  There are more carpenters than steel workers for low rise buildings
